Top 3 most runs conceded by a bowler in IPL

Over the years, we have seen some absolute run-fests in the marvel that is the Indian Premier League. The short boundaries and placid surfaces have been loved by the batters. The same cannot be said about the bowlers who have at times, been reduced to mere spectators.

While there have been plenty of bowlers who have leaked runs aplenty, a few have received special treatment. Here, we look at the 3 bowlers who have conceded the most runs in an IPL game-

1. Basil Thampi (0-70 vs RCB, 2018)

The Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru is known for producing run fests and the script was no different for a game between RCB and SRH there back in 2018. As a result, Basil Thampi, the 30-year-old medium pacer, registered an unwanted record. He was taken to the cleaners as the RCB batters, namely, AB de Villiers, Moeen Ali, Colin de Grandhomme and Sarfaraz Khan were on fire.

Thampi went on to concede 70 runs in his four overs and couldn’t even manage a wicket. It was a horrible outing for him and his returns remain the most expensive figures in the history of the cash-rich league.

Coming to the game, RCB made 218 in the first innings. In response, SRH made 204, falling short of the target by 15 runs. It was a sensational game for the crowd and batters but one wouldn’t expect a similar response from Thampi.

2. Yash Dayal (0-69 vs KKR, 2023)

During a game between KKR and Gujarat Titans in IPL 2023, Yash Dayal leaked 69 runs in his 4 overs. His final over will never be forgotten by fans and pundits. Dayal was tasked with 28 runs to defend off the last over of the game and that is when Rinku Singh unleashed hell on the 26-year-old.

Rinku smashed 5 sixes to change the narrative and help KKR win what was a lost game. Dayal was inconsolable and the effect of this was so bad that Dayal’s health took a hit as well.

However, despite his terrible performance on that night, Dayal received a big contract from RCB and has done well in the two games that he has played so far this season.

3. Ishant Sharma, Mujeeb ur Rahman, Arshdeep Singh and Kwena Maphaka (0-66)

In third place, are four bowlers, who have all conceded 66 runs during a particular game.

First up is Ishant Sharma who finds himself on this list owing to his poor outing in a game against the Chennai Super Kings back in 2013. Sharma was given special treatment by Suresh Raina who fell one run short of a century. CSK beat SRH by a convincing margin of 77 runs in that game.

Mujeeb ur Rehman, the young Afghan also conceded 66 runs during an IPL game. This happened in 2019 when Rehman, a part of Kings XI Punjab, was taken apart by SRH’s batters, particularly David Warner and Mohammad Nabi.

Arshdeep Singh’s infamous spell against the Mumbai Indians in IPL 2023 saw him concede 66 runs in 3.5 overs. He was smashed all around the park by Ishan Kishan, Suryakumar Yadav and Tilak Verma. However, Arshdeep managed to bag a consolation wicket for himself, that of a well-set Kishan.

Lastly, there is Kwena Maphaka, the latest entrant on this list courtesy of the baptism by fire that he faced in Hyderabad last night. Maphaka, only 17, was handed a debut by the Mumbai Indians and he started well, conceding just 8 off his first over. However, that was as far as the good part was concerned. Travis Head and Heinrich Klaasen brought out some magnificent shots against the young boy who wouldn’t have expected those in his worst nightmare. Eventually, he returned figures of 0-66 in his four overs.
