His longevity was equally impressive, as he enjoyed a 19-year Test career from 1999 to 2018.

Throughout his career, Herath reached several significant milestones. In May 2016, he became only the third Sri Lankan bowler to take 300 Test wickets, after Muttiah Muralitharan and Chaminda Vaas. Later that year, he achieved another rare feat by becoming one of the few bowlers to register five-wicket hauls against all Test-playing nations. In 2017, he crossed the 400-wicket mark, becoming just the second Sri Lankan to do so.

Herath also had a brief stint as Sri Lanka’s Test captain. In October 2016, he was appointed skipper for the tour of Zimbabwe in the absence of Angelo Mathews, becoming the oldest Sri Lankan to captain the team for the first time.

He announced his retirement in 2018 and played his final Test against England at Galle. Fittingly, he marked the occasion by reaching 100 Test wickets at the venue, dismissing England captain Joe Root.
