Predicted Playing XI of Zimbabwe in 1st Test vs Afghanistan

Predicted Playing XI of Zimbabwe in 1st Test vs Afghanistan

Zimbabwe will begin their two-match Test series against Afghanistan at Sharjah Cricket Stadium on November 5. The visitors will look to make a strong start against a side that has been building experience in the longer format, while Afghanistan will aim to use home conditions to their advantage.

Zimbabwe’s squad features a mix of experienced campaigners and younger batters who have shown promise in recent red-ball cricket. Innocent Kaia, Brian Bennett and Wesley Madhevere are among the players who impressed in the team’s previous Test assignment, while Blessing Muzarabani and Richard Ngarava are expected to lead the pace attack.

The visitors are likely to rely on a balanced combination featuring specialist batters, a wicketkeeper, an all-rounder and a three-pronged pace attack.

Here’s Zimbabwe’s Predicted XI for first Test:

Top order: Innocent Kaia and Ben Curran

Innocent Kaia is expected to open the innings after making a strong impression in Zimbabwe’s previous Test outing. His 140-run performance demonstrated his ability to occupy the crease and build a substantial innings. Zimbabwe will hope he can carry that form into the series against Afghanistan.

Ben Curran could partner Kaia at the top of the order. The left-hander provides a different angle against Afghanistan’s bowlers and can help build a steady opening partnership. His role will be to negotiate the new ball and avoid giving the hosts early breakthroughs.

Brian Bennett is predicted to bat at No. 3. The young batter has shown an ability to score at a healthy rate while remaining composed at the crease. His contribution will be important if Zimbabwe lose an early wicket, as he could help stabilise the innings and build a partnership with the captain.

Middle order: Ervine and Madhevere to anchor the innings

Craig Ervine is likely to occupy the No. 4 position and lead the side. The experienced left-hander brings valuable knowledge of international cricket and will be expected to guide Zimbabwe through challenging periods.

Ervine’s ability to build an innings will be particularly important against Afghanistan’s spin options. He will need to remain patient, rotate the strike and avoid allowing the hosts to build pressure through consecutive dot balls.

Wesley Madhevere could bat at No. 5. The all-rounder offers flexibility in the middle order and can contribute with both bat and ball. His role will be to support the established batters while maintaining a scoring rate that prevents Afghanistan from settling into a defensive rhythm.

Brendan Taylor is predicted to bat at No. 6. His experience could prove valuable in a match where Zimbabwe may need to recover from a middle-order collapse. Taylor’s presence would also give the visitors another batter capable of guiding the innings through the latter stages.

Wicketkeeper and all-rounder: Tsiga and Evans add depth

Tafadzwa Tsiga is expected to take the wicketkeeping duties and bat at No. 7. His inclusion would provide Zimbabwe with a specialist wicketkeeper while adding depth to the lower middle order.

Brad Evans could follow at No. 8. The seam-bowling all-rounder offers a useful combination of lower-order batting and pace bowling. His ability to contribute in both departments could allow Zimbabwe to field a balanced attack without compromising their batting depth.

Evans will be particularly important if Zimbabwe need to extend their innings after losing several wickets. With the ball, he can provide support to the frontline seamers and help maintain pressure during the middle overs.

Bowlers: Muzarabani and Ngarava to lead the pace unit

Blessing Muzarabani is expected to spearhead Zimbabwe’s pace attack. His height and ability to generate bounce make him a dangerous option, especially against batters who prefer playing off the front foot.

Richard Ngarava could partner Muzarabani with the new ball. The left-arm seamer offers variety and can challenge Afghanistan’s right-handed batters with his angle across the crease. His accuracy will be important in building pressure and creating opportunities for the other bowlers.

Newman Nyamhuri is predicted to complete the pace attack. His inclusion would give Zimbabwe another seam option and allow the captain to rotate his bowlers across different phases of the innings.
