Top 3 Player Battles to Watch Out for in 1st Test Between Afghanistan and Zimbabwe

Top 3 Player Battles to Watch Out for in 1st Test Between Afghanistan and Zimbabwe

Afghanistan and Zimbabwe are set to begin their two-Test series at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium on November 5, 2026. The opening match presents an intriguing contest between Afghanistan’s spin resources and Zimbabwe’s experienced batting group, with both sides looking to establish early control in the series.

Afghanistan will be led by Rahmat Shah, while Zimbabwe will rely on Craig Ervine’s leadership and the experience of several players returning to the Test setup. With Sharjah traditionally offering assistance to spinners as a match progresses, the contest could hinge on how well the batters handle pressure and adapt to changing conditions.

Here are 3 player battles to watch out for in 1st Test:

1. Rahmat Shah vs Blessing Muzarabani

Afghanistan captain Rahmat Shah will be one of the key figures in the home side’s batting lineup. His ability to build an innings, rotate the strike and counterattack when opportunities arise makes him a crucial wicket for Zimbabwe. Rahmat also has an impressive record against Zimbabwe, with the ICC listing him as Afghanistan’s leading batter in this head-to-head.

Zimbabwe’s best chance of dismissing him early could lie with Blessing Muzarabani. The tall fast bowler can extract bounce and create awkward angles, particularly against batters who prefer to play on the front foot. Muzarabani’s ability to maintain a probing line outside off stump could test Rahmat’s patience, while the occasional short delivery may force the Afghanistan skipper to adjust his approach.

This battle could shape the first innings. If Rahmat gets settled, he can anchor Afghanistan’s batting and allow the middle order to play more freely. However, if Muzarabani strikes early, Zimbabwe could put pressure on Afghanistan before the innings gathers momentum.

2. Craig Ervine vs Qais Ahmad

Craig Ervine’s experience will be important for Zimbabwe, particularly if the visitors lose early wickets. The left-handed batter is capable of occupying the crease for long periods and has previously produced substantial scores against Afghanistan. His ability to read the game and manage different bowling styles makes him a valuable presence in the middle order.

Afghanistan could look to Qais Ahmad to challenge Ervine once the ball begins to turn. The leg-spinner offers variation through flight, pace and spin, making it difficult for batters to settle into a predictable scoring pattern. Against a left-hander, Qais can also attack the stumps while drawing Ervine forward and creating opportunities for catches around the bat.

Ervine’s response will be vital. He may need to use his feet, rotate the strike and avoid allowing Qais to build pressure through consecutive dot balls. If Ervine can neutralise the leg-spinner, Zimbabwe will have a better chance of building a competitive total. If Qais gets him out early, Afghanistan could expose the visitors’ middle order.

3. Innocent Kaia vs Yamin Ahmadzai

Innocent Kaia could be a major factor at the top of Zimbabwe’s batting order. He made a strong impression in his recent Test appearance, scoring 140 runs, and will be keen to carry that confidence into the Sharjah encounter. His ability to provide a solid start could give Zimbabwe’s middle order the platform it needs.

Yamin Ahmadzai, meanwhile, returns to Afghanistan’s Test squad after an impressive domestic first-class campaign. The Afghanistan Cricket Board highlighted his 42 wickets at an average of 12.73, underlining the form that earned him a recall.

Yamin’s challenge will be to find movement with the new ball and make Kaia play as often as possible. A disciplined line around off stump, combined with subtle changes in length, could test the opener’s technique. Kaia will need to remain compact early and avoid chasing deliveries away from his body.

This contest could determine Zimbabwe’s start. If Kaia survives the opening spell and settles in, he could once again become a major run-scoring threat. If Yamin removes him early, Afghanistan would gain an important advantage.
