OTD 1978: When was Ragana Herath born? Former Sri Lankan Cricketer

Former Sri Lankan cricketer Ragana Herath born on March 19, 1978. He is widely regarded as one of the finest spinners in cricket history and carved a remarkable legacy in the longest format of the game. He remains the most successful left-arm bowler in Test cricket history. He was also a key member of Sri Lanka’s squad that lifted the ICC World Twenty20 title in 2014.

Herath made his Test debut against Australia at the Galle International Stadium in 1999. However, his rise to prominence was not immediate. Despite debuting early, he had to wait for consistent opportunities, as Sri Lanka’s spin department was dominated by the legendary Muttiah Muralitharan. Herath’s One Day International debut came later in 2004 against Zimbabwe at the Harare Sports Club.

It was only after Muralitharan’s retirement that Herath truly emerged as Sri Lanka’s premier spinner. Making a successful return to the Test side in 2009 against Pakistan, he soon established himself as the backbone of Sri Lanka’s bowling attack. Former captain Mahela Jayawardene once rated him as the country’s leading bowler in the post-Muralitharan era, highlighting his immense value to the team.

Herath’s achievements in Test cricket are extraordinary. He became the first left-arm spinner to claim 400 Test wickets and eventually finished his career with 433 wickets, the highest tally for any left-arm spinner in the format. In February 2018, during Sri Lanka’s tour of Bangladesh, he surpassed Wasim Akram to become the most successful left-arm bowler in Test cricket history. His longevity was equally impressive, as he enjoyed a 19-year Test career from 1999 to 2018.

Throughout his career, Herath reached several significant milestones. In May 2016, he became only the third Sri Lankan bowler to take 300 Test wickets, after Muttiah Muralitharan and Chaminda Vaas. Later that year, he achieved another rare feat by becoming one of the few bowlers to register five-wicket hauls against all Test-playing nations. In 2017, he crossed the 400-wicket mark, becoming just the second Sri Lankan to do so.

Herath also had a brief stint as Sri Lanka’s Test captain. In October 2016, he was appointed skipper for the tour of Zimbabwe in the absence of Angelo Mathews, becoming the oldest Sri Lankan to captain the team for the first time.

He announced his retirement in 2018 and played his final Test against England at Galle. Fittingly, he marked the occasion by reaching 100 Test wickets at the venue, dismissing England captain Joe Root.
