Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) lock horns in match 46 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Sunday, April 28. This clash marks the second time these two teams will lock horns this season. In their previous meeting, which took place in Hyderabad, SRH emerged victorious and secured a comfortable six-wicket win with 11 deliveries remaining in their chase.

Judging by the points tally, the contest is even as SRH is placed third, while CSK is in the fifth position on the points table. However, when the 2018 edition finalists collide, past results and positions on the points table do not have much bearing on the outcome of the match.

For Chennai Super Kings, Shivam Dube has been in incredible form and has been scoring runs consistently. Dube has scored 311 runs from eight games at an average of 49 and a strike rate of 169.94. He has hit 23 fours and 22 sixes so far. Meanwhile, captain Ruturaj Gaikwad had an amazing game in their last game against Lucknow Super Giants, scoring a brilliant 108* runs knock, in a losing cause though.

The right-handed batter is CSK’s highest run-scorer so far this season and has two fifties and one century from eight games. MS Dhoni has played some useful cameos lower down the order. All-rounder Ravindra Jadeja has been having a decent season so far, scoring 157 runs and picking four wickets in eight games.

Mustafizur Rahman is the leading wicket-taker for CSK with 12 wickets from seven games. Matheesha Pathirana has also fared well, having taken eleven wickets from five games. Other bowlers, Deepak Chahar, Shardul Thakur, and Tushar Deshpande haven’t fired the way the team would have wanted them to.

On the other hand, the Pat Cummins-led side has one of the most dangerous batting line-ups in the tournament. The side has been scoring more than 220 runs in most of their games, batting first. But in the last game against the Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Cummins and Co. fell 35 runs short of the target.

The in-form opening pair of Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma has been having a brilliant run in the season so far.  Both the left-handers have been instrumental in providing solid starts to their team. Head has scored 325 runs in seven games, while Sharma is not much behind and has hit 288 runs from his bat. Shahbaz Ahmed and Nitish Kumar Reddy have also shown their potential while Aiden Markram and Heinrich Klaasen have also been in great shape.

Meanwhile, T Natarajan tops the list of highest wicket-takers for the Orange Army. The left-arm seamer has picked up 12 wickets in six games. Skipper Cummins has too been in decent form picking ten wickets in eight games.

MA Chidambaram Stadium Pitch Report

The pitch at the M.A. Chidambaram stadium in Chennai favors batters, with fast bowlers being the primary threat for taking wickets in this match. The dew factor kicks in at the game’s later stages, helping the chasing team. The team that wins the toss will look to bowl first.

Probable Playing XI

Chennai Super Kings (CSK):

History says that Chennai dislikes changing their playing XI, especially in the latter stages. However, Daryl Mitchell hasn’t been performing of late, which has been a concern for the Chennai side. With the opening duo and lower-order doing their job perfectly the team management has to quickly think about the poor performance from their Kiwi all-rounder. Pace bowler Deepak Chahar also hasn’t been able to pick wickets at regular intervals, which has been alarming for the side.

Predicted XI: Ajinkya Rahane, Ruturaj Gaikwad (C), Daryl Mitchell, Shivam Dube, Ravindra Jadeja, Moeen Ali, MS Dhoni (WK), Deepak Chahar, Tushar Deshpande, Mustafizur Rahman, Matheesha Pathirana

Impact Player: Shardul Thakur

Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH):

The opening partnership between Abhishek Sharma and Travis Head has been outstanding for Sunrisers Hyderabad. SRH has the potential to capitalize in the middle overs and accumulate a substantial total. The team’s young talents have displayed remarkable maturity, providing the much-needed finish in the latter stages of the innings. Furthermore, the bowling lineup consists of experienced campaigners, which has contributed to their success in achieving favorable results.

Predicted XI: Abhishek Sharma, Travis Head, Aiden Markram, Heinrich Klaasen (WK), Nitish Kumar Reddy, Abdul Samad, Shahbaz Ahmed, Pat Cummins (C), Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Mayank Markande, Jaydev Unadkat

Impact Player: T Natarajan
