OTD | Pakistan won their first international match against Australia in 12 years in an ODI encounter in 2017

Pakistan created history under captain Mohammad Hafeez by winning an ODI game against Australia in Australia in 2017. It was a great match of cricket where Hafeez led from the front, helping the team get past the victory line. Australia elected to bat first after winning the toss.

They were already leading the series, 1-0, and had their record intact against Pakistan. However, batting first didn’t suit them well as they lost three quick wickets in just 41 runs. Australia’s then captain Steve Smith took the responsibility on himself and slammed a beautiful knock against the visitors. He scored 60 runs off 101 balls, hitting just two boundaries.

Although he played an anchoring role in the innings, he didn’t get any support from the others. Australia ended up scoring just 220 runs. Mohammad Amir was the star bowler who took three wickets and gave important breakthroughs. Well, 220 wasn’t a lot but for Pakistan, playing at MCG, where they hadn’t won a single game, was too much.

Much to everyone’s surprise, Pakistan’s opening pair made a 68-run partnership where captain Mohammad Hafeez scored 72 runs off 104 balls, hitting eight boundaries and Sharjeel Khan scored 29 runs off 32 balls. After Khan got out, Babar Azam scored 34 runs off 49 balls and then Shoaib Malik scored 42 runs in 52 balls.

Mitchell Starc and James Faulkner each claimed two wickets. The other bowlers failed to take any wickets because of which they lost the game. Pakistan’s collective efforts helped them create history in Australia by beating them by six wickets. It was a huge win for the Men in Green as they won after 17 years.
