ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026: 3 New Zealand players to watch for in SA vs NZ

The first semi-final of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 promises to be a thrilling contest as South Africa take on New Zealand at Eden Gardens, Kolkata, on March 4. South Africa have been one of the most dominant teams in the tournament, entering the knockout stage unbeaten. They registered wins over New Zealand, Afghanistan, Canada and UAE in the group stage, before overcoming India, West Indies and Zimbabwe in the Super Eight to seal their semi-final berth.

New Zealand, on the other hand, have had a mixed campaign. They suffered a defeat against South Africa in the group stage but bounced back with wins over Canada, UAE and Afghanistan. Their Super Eight clash against Pakistan was washed out, and while they defeated Sri Lanka, they lost to England in their final fixture. However, a superior Net Run Rate took them into the semi-finals. As they prepare for a high-stakes rematch, here are three New Zealand players who could play a decisive role.

Here are three New Zealand players to watch out for in semi-final 1 of the T20 World Cup 2026:

Tim Seifert

Tim Seifert

Tim Seifert has been New Zealand’s leading run-scorer in the tournament and remains a key figure at the top of the order. He began the campaign strongly, scoring 65 against Afghanistan and following it up with a blistering unbeaten 89 against UAE, where he stitched together a 100-plus partnership with Finn Allen. Although Seifert has not produced a major score in the subsequent matches, with 35 being his highest, his aggressive intent at the top remains vital.

The Super Eight fixtures in Sri Lanka offered conditions that were not entirely suited to his free-flowing stroke play. However, the semi-final at Eden Gardens could provide a better batting surface, allowing Seifert to play his natural attacking game. With 2169 runs in 88 T20Is at an average of 30.54 and a strike rate of 144.79, including 15 half-centuries, he has both experience and firepower. If he finds rhythm early, he could set the platform for a formidable total.

Finn Allen

Finn Allen is another explosive opener capable of changing the game within a few overs. He smashed an unbeaten 84 against UAE and, even when he hasn’t converted starts into big scores, has consistently looked to provide immediate momentum. Allen’s fearless approach makes him one of the most dangerous powerplay batters in T20 cricket.

In 60 T20Is, Allen has scored 1554 runs at an average of 27.26 and a remarkable strike rate of 166.38, including two centuries and seven fifties. His ability to attack from the first ball puts bowlers under pressure and complements Seifert’s aggressive style. If Allen fires, New Zealand can seize early control and unsettle South Africa’s bowling attack.

Matt Henry

With the ball, Matt Henry has been a dependable performer. He has maintained discipline with his line and length, providing control in both the powerplay and middle overs. Henry’s figures in the tournament underline his consistency: 1/27 against Afghanistan, 2/37 versus UAE, 1/28 against Canada, a superb 2/3 against Sri Lanka, and 1/19 in the final Super Eight match. Even in games where he hasn’t picked up multiple wickets, he has kept the scoring rate in check.

Overall, Henry has claimed 50 wickets in 41 T20Is at an average of 22.80 and an economy rate of 8.39. His ability to disrupt partnerships and bowl tight spells under pressure makes him crucial in a knockout encounter.
