OTD | In his first Test as full-time captain, Virat Kohli ended on losing side against Australia

OTD | In his first Test as full-time captain, Virat Kohli ended on losing side against Australia

10 years ago, on this day in 2024, India lost the first Test against Australia in the Border Gavaskar Trophy 2014. The interesting fact about this game was that it was the first game for the then 26-year-old star Indian batter Virat Kohli as India’s Test skipper. He took over the charge from the regular skipper MS Dhoni, who was rested for the first Test of the series. Unfortunately, it was on this day [13th December] in 2014, when Virat lost his first Test as captain.

The Test series opener was played at the Adelaide Oval from December 9th to December 13th, 2014. The hosts’ skipper Michael Clarke won the toss and decided to bat first. Aussies posted a massive total of 517 runs for the loss of 7 wickets before declaring their first innings. Star opener David Warner, skipper Michael Clarke, and the veteran batter Steve Smith scored three crucial half-centuries for Australia in the first innings.

In reply, stand-in skipper Virat Kohli’s century, alongside half-centuries from Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane, India managed to score 444 runs before getting all-out. Later in the second innings, Australia managed to declare their innings after scoring 290 runs for the loss of 5 wickets, giving India a big target of 364 runs. For another time in the second successive innings, the star opener David Warner scored an amazing century, scoring 102 runs, hitting 11 fours and a six.

The journey of Virat Kohli from stand-in to full-time Test skipper in same series

While chasing the target of 364 runs, skipper Virat Kohli smashed a second successive century in the game, scoring 141 runs in the second innings. Besides him, opener Murali Vijay unfortunately missed a well-deserved century, getting trapped in an LBW by Nathan Lyon at the individual score of 99 runs.

Despite the valiant efforts of Kohli and Vijay, India failed to chase down the target as they were bundled out at the score of 315 runs. Eventually, Australia won the first Test by 48 runs, handing Virat Kohli a defeat in his first Test as India’s Test captain.

Further in the same Test series, former skipper MS Dhoni announced his Test retirement and Virat Kohli was appointed as the full-time Test skipper of the Indian team afterwards.
