3 reasons why Australia lost to South Africa in the WTC 2025 Final

Australia came into the World Test Championship final Against South Africa as the defending champions. Pat Cummins and his side Lost hold of their crown as South Africa won the match by five wickets to achieve their first international cricket title for over 27 years. The home of cricket in Lord’s saw Massive celebrations take place as Temba Bavuma Held aloft the world test championship title.

Speaking at the end of the game, Pat Cummins said, “They were fantastic, that fourth innings wasn’t a lot on that wicket, but they did not give us a chance. A bit of both, it has been a wonderful two years, the guys have performed well to get us here, did not come together this game, no doubt for the first two days, the bowlers were fantastic and always looked like the ball was darting around”

The Aussie skipper praising the Proteas side also said, “Deserved champions, all facets really, on all four days they just kept themselves in the game. When they got a sniff, they took a few wickets, fantastic. So, congratulations to Temba, the staff, and all the players. Prefer the Oval last time. It’s fantastic, it’s the pinnacle, I love Test cricket. It’s something you build towards over the two years. It’s a huge achievement to make the final and then a one-game shootout”

Here are the three reasons why Australia lost the WTC finals

3- Nathan Lyon’s lack of wickets

Australian spinner Nathan Lyon didn’t pick up any wickets in the World Test Championship final against South Africa. The veteran spinner with 553 test wickets was expected to play a key role with the ball in the second innings when the pitch was starting to aid turn and bounce. South Africa’s bowlers did very well to stifle out the threat posed by Lyon, which saw the veteran spinner go wicketless and pose huge problems for Australia and Pat Cummins in particular.

2- Wrong batting order

Australia made a huge mistake when they shifted Cameroon green to the number 3 batting spot. Green could score only four runs in the game as he scored a duck in the second innings and was caught in the slips on each occasion. Green, who has batted in the middle order, is coming back from a long injury layoff, which has seen him miss a lot of cricketing action. Travis Head or Steve Smith could have been an ideal batter to have the number three spot in the batting order in such a huge game of high significance. Travis Head Two didn’t have a great game as he failed with the bat and was out early in each innings. The left-handed batter was looked at as one of the key players for Australia in the massive game that could have given them their second WTC title.

1- Australia’s continuing problems with opening

One of the biggest problems for Australia has been that they have not been able to find an ideal replacement for David Warner at the top of the order. Usman Khwaja also failed to do much with the bat in what could be his final big game for Australia at the world stage. Marnus Labuschagne was asked to open the batting, but the veteran batter failed to come up with a youth score on the board, which derailed Australia’s hopes of retaining the title.
