Chris Woakes’ all-round performance and Harry Brook’s sensible batting in England’s second innings helped the hosts beat Australia by three wickets in the third Ashes Test match at Leeds on Sunday, July 9.

Woakes took three wickets in the first innings and three in the second, while Brook scored 75 runs in the second innings to help England chase down the target of 251. Mark Wood was awarded the Player of the Match for his spell of 5/34 and 2/66.

Earlier in the game, the toss belonged to the hosts, and they elected to bowl first. Stuart Broad drew first blood for the Ben Stokes-led side dismissing David Warner for 4 runs.

Australia lost their wickets at regular intervals and were 85/4 at one point. Mitchell Marsh and Travis Head rescued them, putting together a 155-run partnership. Marsh’s innings was a masterclass in batting against pace, and he showed great courage and determination.

He scored 118 off 118 balls, before being dismissed by Woakes. Wood was in devastating form after tea, taking 4 wickets as Australia collapsed from 240/5 to 263 all out.

In response, England’s batters did not live up to the expectations either and lost their wickets cheaply. Ben Stokes’s masterclass helped England reduce the first innings deficit to 26 runs as smashed his way to 80 runs. Australia started the second Innings with a lead of 26 runs. David warner once again failed against Stuart Broad, but Khawaja and Labuschagne put together a 57-run partnership for the second wicket.

Travis Head’s steady knock of 77 off 112 balls, along with contributions from Labuschagne (33 off 77) and Khawja (43 off 96) helped Australia post a total of 224 in the second innings and England were set a target of 251.

In the chase of 251, Harry Brook’s composed knock of 75 off 93 balls, along with contributions from Zak Crawley (44 off 55) and Chris Woakes (32* off 47), helped England beat Australia by three wickets.
