Women's World Cup 2025: "I was really scared to even get up" - Arundhati Reddy shares harrowing experience after painful injury during warm-up game

Indian fast bowler Arundhati Reddy sustained a painful leg injury and had to be wheelchaired off the field during the warm-up game against New Zealand. She suffered the injury while trying to take a sharp return catch to dismiss Heather Knight. However, she lost her balance and fell awkwardly on her left leg. The 28-year-old couldn’t get back on her feet despite the best attempts of India’s medical team. In the end, she had to use the help of a wheelchair to leave the ground.

While there were doubts about Reddy’s availability for the Women’s World Cup, the right-arm pacer put them to bed when she played in the second warm-up fixture against New Zealand on Saturday. She finished with excellent figures of 2/42 in nine overs.

After the match on Saturday at the BCCI Centre of Excellence Ground in Bengaluru, Harleen asked how she recovered so quickly.

“I just wanted to ask that you know, yesterday — I mean, in the last game — you were in a wheelchair. How difficult was it for you to recover so quickly? And I know all the fans back home, the people who love you, were there. They were a little tense. How was that experience?” Harleen asked in a video uploaded by the BCCI.

I would really like to thank the medical staff: Reddy

Reddy expressed her gratitude to the medical team for getting her back to full fitness in quick time and giving her the confidence that she is ready to play.

“Initially, it was scary for me as well because at that time it was quite a big impact, so I was really scared to even get up. But I would really like to thank the medical staff and the team because they really did a good job and gave me the confidence that I could play. So I would really like to thank them,” Arundhati said.

India lost their first warm-up game to England by 153 runs. However, they bounced back with a four-wicket victory against New Zealand in a rain-curtailed clash. India begin their World Cup campaign with a clash against Sri Lanka in Guwahati on Tuesday, September 30.
