In a major development, Sri Lankan cricketer (bowling all-rounder) Chamika Karunaratne has been caught up in a court case for allegedly being the father of a woman’s two-month-old child. The woman has claimed that Karunaratne has given up on taking the responsibility of the kid, sparking major controversey in the cricketer’s personal life.
She spoke to the media after attending the hearing on November 23 (Sunday), while also claiming that the cricketer had not made an appearance to the court session and that he had informed officials and the judge that he was not feeling well.
The woman, whose identity has understandably not been disclosed, noted that the cricketer has failed to take responsibility and accountability of the child. She also asserted that she was 100 per cent sure that Karunaratne is the child’s father biologically.
“Chamika Karunaratne is this child’s father. Because he has refused to accept responsibility, I have been forced to come to court to request a paternity test. This child has to live in Sri Lanka. I know he is the father. All I want is for him to carry out his responsibilities,” the woman stated, as quoted by the Daily Mirror.
Speaking of Karunaratne’s international career, he has played one Test, 26 ODIs and 45 T20Is for his country up until now. As mentioned above, he last played for the island nation in September earlier this year. Before that, he featured for SLC Greens in the 2025 instalment of the T20 competition. Karunaratne made his international debut in February 2019, before having to wait more than two years for donning the national colours again.
It remains to be seen the action, if any, taken by Sri Lanka Cricket on this matter. Till now, neither the administrative body nor the cricketer has come out and given any sort of official statement on the same. The development has also not been proven as fully concrete. The 29-year-old may potentially face a suspension or some similar sort of punishment on the grounds of disciplinary action if proven guilty by the women who pushed allegations against him.
