Virat Kohli to join MS Dhoni, Sunil Gavaskar and Kapil Dev in elite list during World Cup 2023

The ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 will get underway from October 05 in India while the Men in Blue will start their campaign with a game against Australia on October 08. There will be several players in the Indian team who will be playing their third World Cup while Virat Kohli will be the only one playing his fourth. Along with him, several legends such as Kapil Dev, Sunil Gavaskar, Anil Kumble, MS Dhoni and others have also played four ODI World Cups each.

On the other hand, legendary India batter Sachin Tendulkar sits on top of the list having played six ODI World Cups in his career. He also holds the world record for representing his nation most number of times at the biggest stage of cricket along with Pakistan’s Javed Miandad. Apart from them, legends such as Ricky Ponting, Mahela Jayawardene, Jacques Kallis and many more have played in five ODI World Cups each.

Meanwhile, Kohli played his first ever ODI World Cup in 2011 at the age of 22, he went on to score a magnificent hundred on his World Cup debut vs Bangladesh scoring 100* (83). The Delhi-born cricketer further scored a brilliant 59 vs West Indies followed by a crucial 35 (49) vs Sri Lanka in the big final.

The star India batter further began the 2015 edition with a sensational hundred vs Pakistan scoring 107 (126) with the help of eight fours in his innings. However, he failed to cross the 50-run mark in the next seven innings played in the tournament.

Virat Kohli is India’s second-highest run scorer in ODI World Cup

Later on in the 2019 edition of the tournament, leading the Indian team, Kohli scored 443 runs in nine innings at an average of 55.37 and a strike rate of 94.05 with five fifties to his name. The 34-year-old is the second-highest run scorer for India in ODI World Cups having 1030 runs to his name from 26 innings at an average of 46.81 and a strike rate of 86.70 with two hundreds and six fifties to his name.

Having failed to win the coveted trophy in the previous two attempts, Kohli will be eager to help his team with the World Cup on home soil with his stupendous performance with the bat.
