Gorge Bailey, Australia’s national team selector, opened up about the chances Cameron Green has for the much-awaited ICC T20 World Cup which will begin in June in the West Indies and the United States of America.
He stated that the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) could help Green get a place in the squad. Notably, the star all-rounder was not picked for Australia’s two-match T20I series against West Indies and New Zealand in order to prepare for Tests. The 24-year-old will join the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) squad in late March.
“Yeah, very firmly. We know he’s (Green) going to go to the IPL and getting a big batch of T20 cricket in. It’s a constant conversation with multi-format players, working out the priority at any given time, and making sure they get what they need but he’s certainly one whose name I think, as we are finalising that 15 for the World Cup, will be firmly in the mix,” Bailey was quoted as saying by ESPNCricinfo.
Bailey went on to say that the management is confident that Green could pose a strong challenge against the opposition in any format. The 24-year-old earned a spot at the top of Australia’s T20I side before the World Cup in 2022 when he hit two quick half-centuries against India. He had a forgettable campaign in 2023 across the formats which subsequently resulted in losing his place at the end of the Ashes. He then made a comeback to the Test side in a new role at No. 4 following the retirement of David Warner.
“There’s a skill set there that’s unbelievable across all three formats. [We’re] really confident that just continuing to expose him he’ll get better and better and learn more about his game. But like any player, I don’t think it’s going to be a straight line – there’ll be fluctuations throughout, as there always is. His last two years have been a whirlwind, I imagine, at different times. He’s travelled with the team basically non-stop. It’s a challenge that all those players do go through, but I guess when you are younger and you get exposed to that, it can be tough. But I’m sure if you ask Cam he wouldn’t have it any other way,” Bailey added.
