In a recent chat, Australia’s seasoned off-spinner Nathan Lyon didn’t mince his words when talking about Cameron Green. The 24-year-old all-rounder, who’s recently taken up the number four spot, has received a significant nod of approval from Lyon.

Lyon, known for his straightforward remarks, shared that Green’s performances in Shield cricket, particularly at number four, have posed challenges for him as a bowler. Despite that, Lyon expressed his belief that Green has the potential to become a Jacques Kallis-like figure in international cricket at that position.

“I have had the challenge of bowling to Greeny in Shield cricket with him batting at No.4 and he has given me a lot of headaches. I actually enjoy seeing him bat at number four and I feel like he could be the next Jacques Kallis of international cricket at number four,” Lyon was quoted as saying by Perth Now.

The comparison with Jacques Kallis, a legendary South African cricketer, carries weight, considering Kallis’ remarkable achievements with over 25,000 international runs and 500 wickets.

Green hailed as a generational talent, experienced a dip in form following his maiden Test hundred in March 2023, leading to his exclusion during the 2023 Ashes series. Despite these setbacks, Nathan Lyon strongly supports Green’s potential for success in his new batting position. Lyon expressed confidence in the team, emphasizing the positive atmosphere in the change room and specifically mentioning Steve Smith at number one and Cameron Green at number four.

“There is so much confidence in that change room around all the guys and not just Smithy batting at No.1 and Cameron at number four,” he added further.

I don’t need to talk about Smithy: Lyon

While Lyon praised Cameron Green, he dismissed concerns about Steve Smith’s form, highlighting Smith’s remarkable track record and unparalleled problem-solving skills. Despite challenges, Lyon expresses confidence in Smith’s ability as Australia will aim for a 2-0 series whitewash against the West Indies.

“I don’t need to talk about Smithy; his numbers speak for themselves. There has been no one worried about Smithy’s form. We are talking about arguably the greatest player of the last decade and there is a lot of talk about his batting. I sit here and laugh because he is arguably the best problem solver I have ever played with,” Lyon concluded.
