Pybus: ‘We made fundamental mistakes, we’ll be reviewing that’

Afghanistan head coach Richard Pybus acknowledged serious batting errors after his side lost the 1st T20I against India by 7 wickets in Delhi on September 13, 2026.

India chased down a target of 157 in just 13.4 overs, with 38 balls to spare, after Afghanistan posted 156 for 8. Pybus, speaking at the post-match press conference, identified the batting as the central problem. Pybus also noted that execution and conditions awareness were areas requiring attention.

“We made fundamental mistakes; we’ll be reviewing that. The issue tonight for me was the batting. We were considerably short of the type of target we should have been able to set. Again, it’s not the lack of skill. We’ve got to be a lot more precise in our fundamentals. You know, I wouldn’t cast any doubt on our intent and our desire, but our execution was, I think the boys will be disappointed with that,” Pybus said, as quoted by Cricinfo.

What went wrong for Afghanistan with the bat?

Afghanistan’s innings was disrupted early, with the side losing three wickets before Axar Patel removed Gulbadin Naib in the sixth over. Ibrahim Zadran was also run out off Axar’s bowling. The spin pair of Axar Patel and Varun Chakravarthy combined to concede just 43 runs from 8 overs, keeping Afghanistan under sustained pressure throughout the middle overs.

The innings was partially rescued by a partnership of 83 runs between Azmatullah Omarzai and Mohammad Nabi, which took Afghanistan from 73 to 156 for 8. Omarzai finished unbeaten on 64 off 44 balls. Despite that recovery, Pybus felt the total was well below what Afghanistan should have been capable of setting. Pybus pointed to the need for better reading of conditions.

“When I talk about us actually being able to execute, it is about assessing conditions. It’s about us being able to read the wicket and get partnerships going. But I also need to be fair to my guys. It’s our first outing for quite a long time and we’ve been rain-affected here in terms of our preparation.’ So I think it’s important for us to get into the rhythm of the series. Obviously, you want to win the first game. But I need to be fair to the guys and give them the opportunity for us to work through the series and see how we adapt,” Pybus said.

How did India win and what comes next for Afghanistan?

India’s chase was dominated by Abhishek Sharma, who scored 82 off 32 balls and was named Player of the Match. Nitish Kumar Reddy and Shivam Dube both went at an economy rate of 17 during the chase. India reached 157 for 3 in 13.4 overs, completing a comfortable 7-wicket victory. Azmatullah Omarzai had taken the wicket of Sanju Samson during the chase. Despite the defeat, Pybus remained measured about Afghanistan’s prospects in the series.

“The reality is, you know, we’re here in this series. I think we’ve got a really good line-up of spin bowlers. Many of them are experienced in these conditions,” Pybus said.
