The highly anticipated ODI World Cup 2023 is scheduled to commence on October 5, with a thrilling match between the finalists of the previous edition, England and New Zealand. However, even before the tournament begins, India and Pakistan have already solidified their positions as strong contenders in the ICC ODI Team Rankings.

Under the leadership of Rohit Sharma, the Indian team has claimed the top spot in the rankings due to their exceptional performance in 50-over cricket throughout the year 2023. Having played 20 ODI matches this year, they have suffered defeat on only four occasions, allowing them to maintain a firm grip on the first position.

Despite their poor performances in the recently concluded Asia Cup 2023, Pakistan are not far behind. They currently hold the second position on the rankings with a rating of 115, trailing the Indian team by a mere two points.

The historical perspective further amplifies the significance of this ranking. Every edition of the World Cup since 1999 has been won by a team that occupied the top two slots in the ODI rankings at the tournament’s inception. It’s a reassuring trend that signifies well for both India and Pakistan.

Moreover, the recent pattern of host countries securing the World Cup title adds another layer of optimism for India. The last three World Cups were claimed by host nations, and India aims to keep that trend alive, with the 2023 final set to unfold at the iconic Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on November 19.

With India boasting of the first position in the ODI ranking and bearing the sole responsibility of hosting the event, the pressure is palpable. However, history is on their side, as the top-ranked team has reached the tournament decider in seven out of the last ten editions, a testament to their consistency and mettle.

As the cricketing world gears up for the marquee event, all eyes will be on India and Pakistan to see if they can reach the finals of the tournament or not.
