Mitchell Marsh reveals he once wanted to play for Zimbabwe

Before becoming an Australia captain, Mitchell Marsh once considered representing Zimbabwe. The admission came ahead of the three-match ODI series between the two sides, scheduled for September 15, 18 and 20, 2026, at Harare Sports Club.

Marsh’s father, Geoff Marsh, coached the Zimbabwe national team during Mitchell’s childhood, and the family lived in the country for three years during that period. Those formative years left a lasting impression.

“I actually wanted to play for Zimbabwe at one point,” Marsh said, speaking to cricket.com.au.

Marsh also played cricket at Harare Sports Club as a boy alongside Tom, Sam and Ben Curran. Tom and Sam Curran now represent England, while Ben Curran is part of Zimbabwe’s ODI squad for this series, giving the reunion an added layer of significance for the Australian captain.

How did Zimbabwe’s captain and the Curran family history add to the occasion?

Zimbabwe captain Sikandar Raza acknowledged Marsh’s deep connection to the country, joking that Marsh was “practically a local”. The sentiment reflected how genuinely embedded Marsh’s childhood memories are in Harare.

The Curran family thread runs further back through cricket history. Kevin Curran featured in the Zimbabwe side that beat Australia in the 1983 World Cup, scoring 27 runs and dismissing Allan Border in that match. Decades later, his son Ben lines up for Zimbabwe in this same series, facing a man who once played alongside him as a child at Harare Sports Club.

Marsh also encountered a former caretaker in Harare.

Marsh also met up with Farai ‘Happy’ Mapondera at the Harare Sports Club. Mapondera worked in Marsh’s family home in Harare. The Australian captain caught up with Mapondera at the Harare sports club, spotting the latter beneath the team viewing area and calling him to the dressing room.

“I refused to eat in the house. I’d go and have dinner with him. He was a big part of my childhood. I spent my days with him a lot of the time,” Marsh said
