On the cusp of elimination, Mumbai Indians (MI) will take on an upbeat Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) side at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Monday, May 6.

The two teams played an awe-inspiring encounter earlier in the season at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad. SRH posted a record-shattering 277/3 and MI also gave a great account of themselves to get to 246/5. The Orange Army emerged victorious by 31 runs in what was only their second game in Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024.

More than a month later, the two teams are placed contrastingly on the points table. Sunrisers are stationed at No. 4, having won six and lost four out of their 10 matches. Meanwhile, Mumbai are languishing at the bottom of the table with just three wins and eight losses from 11 games.

Mumbai’s highest run-getter this season has been Tilak Varma. He has scored 347 runs from 11 innings at an average of 38.56 and a strike rate of 151.53. Former captain Rohit Sharma is the second in the list of leading run-getters for Mumbai this season, having scored 326 runs at an average of 32.60 and a strike rate of 154.50. However, skipper Hardik Pandya’s form with both bat and ball has been pedestrian.

In the bowling department, Jasprit Bumrah is holding the Purple Cap, with 17 wickets from 11 matches at an average of 16.12. He has been well-supported by Gerald Coetzee, who is playing his first season in the cash-rich league. The South African bowler has bagged 13 wickets from 10 matches at 26.23.

Sunrisers have been the most dangerous batting unit in the tournament. They have amassed a 200-plus score five times in their 10 matches. The likes of Travis Head, Abhishek Sharma, and Heinrich Klaasen have been in scintillating form. Head is the leading run-getter for the former champions, having scored 396 rruns from nine innings at an average of 44 and a strike rate of 194.12.

On the bowling front, T Natarajan sits at No. 2 on the Purple Cap list, having accounted for 15 wickets in eight games at 19.13. He has received decent support from SRH captain Pat Cummins. Bhuvneshwar Kumar rolled back the years by picking up a three-for against a dominant Rajasthan Royals side in the last game. Sunrisers will be brimming with confidence after beating table toppers Royals recently by a solitary run and would want to consolidate their position in the top four with a win on Monday.

Wankhede Stadium Pitch Report:

Five games have been played at the Wankhede Stadium in IPL 2024 and two have been won by the chasing teams, while three by the teams batting first. The average first innings score is 186. The ball tends to swing for the first couple of overs at the Wankhede. In the last game, the pitch was slower than normal and the spinners got a good amount of assistance, even with some dew around. Kolkata Knight Riders managed to defend a target of 170, which felt below-par. However, it has to be mentioned that the Mumbai batters, from Suryakumar Yadav, didn’t apply themselves at the crease. Winning the toss and opting to bowl first could be a good option. It will give the chasing team a chance to assess the conditions.

Probable Playing XI:

Mumbai Indians (MI)

Mumbai played with just three overseas players in the last game, leaving Mohammad Nabi out for Naman Dhir. The experienced Afghan all-rounder could come back for this encounter. Rohit had a minor back niggle in the last game and came out to bat as the Impact Player. The Indian captain could walk back into the starting XI and Nuwan Thushara can come in later as the Impact Player.

Predicted XI: Ishan Kishan (WK), Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Varma, Nehal Wadhera, Hardik Pandya (C), Tim David, Mohammad Nabi, Gerald Coetzee, Piyush Chawla, Jasprit Bumrah

Impact Player: Nuwan Thushara

Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH)

Sunrisers Hyderabad have given Anmolpreet Singh a couple of chances at No. 3 and the right-handed batter registered scores of 0 and 5. The visitors could look to bring back Aiden Markram, who was dropped for the last game, and leave out Marco Jansen, who conceded 44 runs and went wicketless in his four overs. Leg-spinner Mayank Markande can come back in place of Anmolpreet.

Predicted XI: Abhishek Sharma, Travis Head, Aiden Markram, Heinrich Klaasen (WK), Nitish Kumar Reddy, Abdul Samad, Shahbaz Ahmed, Pat Cummins (C), Mayank Markande, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Jaydev Unadkat
