India’s Manoj Tiwary announces retirement from all forms of cricket

Manoj Tiwary made his India debut in 2008 against Australia at the Gabba in Brisbane. He remained with the Indian side for a number of years, but injuries and lack of opportunities were two things that halted his progress. His standout innings came against the West Indies in Chennai in 2011, as he scored a brilliant 104 after coming to the crease at the score of 1/2 in the first over. What made his innings more remarkable is the fact that he played with cramps. Interestingly, Tiwary was benched for the next 14 matches after his match-winning performance.

The Bengal batter led his state side to the finals of the Ranji Trophy last season. Bengal lost to Saurashtra in the final match, and many believed it was Manoj’s last hit. However, the right-handed batter didn’t retire immediately, but on Thursday, August 3, the 37-year-old announced on his social media handles that he is bidding farewell to the game of cricket.

Goodbye to the game of cricket. This game has given me everything, I mean every single thing which I had never dreamt of,starting from the times when our life were challenged by different forms of difficulties. Will ever be grateful to this game and to the GOD, who has always been in my side throughout. Taking this opportunity to convey my sincere gratitude to the people who all have played a part in my cricketing journey. Thank you to my all my coaches starting from my childhood till last year who all have played a part in my cricketing achievements. Manabendra Ghosh, my father figure like coach has been the pillar in the cricketing journey. If he had not been there then I would had not reached anywhere in cricketing circle. Thank u Sir and wish u a speedy recovery, as your health is not keeping well. Thank you to my Dad and Mom, they both never put pressure on me to focus on studies rather encouraged me to continue in cricket. Big thank you to my wife, Susmita who has always been on my side from the time she has come in my life. Without her constant support, I would have not made it to the point where I’m today in life. And to all my teammates, past and present and also to the cricket association of bengal, and all the members of the associations who all have played a role in my journey. And how can I not mention to the cricketing admirers who all have wished me throughout my ups and downs and made me a cricketing figure in today’s world. A big thank u from the bottom of my heart. A closer look at Manoj Tiwary’s records

Manoj Tiwary played 12 ODIs for India, scored 287 runs at an average of 26.07, and picked up five wickets. In three T20Is, Manoj batted only once and scored 15 runs. In first-class cricket, Manoj has staggering numbers, scoring 9908 runs in 141 games at an average of 48.56 and a highest of 303*.

In List A cricket, Manoj played 169 games and scored 5581 runs at an average of 42.28. He also featured in 96 Indian Premier League matches and scored 1686 runs at an average of 29.07 and a strike rate of 117.41. He won the IPL in 2012 with Kolkata Knight Riders. Manoj hit the winning runs, a boundary off Dwayne Bravo in the final over.
