The five-time champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) endured one of their toughest seasons in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025, finishing at the bottom of the points table. With only four wins throughout the tournament, their campaign was marred by inconsistent batting performances, particularly from the middle order. Key batters struggled to maintain healthy strike-rates or find rhythm, resulting in repeated collapses and pressure on the top order.

Ahead of IPL 2025, CSK had assembled what appeared to be a balanced squad at the mega auction. The additions of Jamie Overton, Noor Ahmad, Khaleel Ahmed, Nathan Ellis, Shreyas Gopal, Vijay Shankar, Rahul Tripathi, and Deepak Hooda gave the team a promising look. On paper, the line-up offered stability, depth, and the potential to challenge opponents with a mix of experience and emerging talent.

However, the season did not unfold as expected. Batters like Tripathi, Shankar, and Hooda, players Chennai relied on to deliver consistently, failed to make meaningful contributions. Their prolonged struggles compounded the team’s problems. On the brighter side, the bowling unit showed encouraging signs, with Khaleel Ahmed, Anshul Kamboj, and Mukesh Choudhary finding form, while Noor Ahmad impressed in the spin department with commendable control.

Did CSK make the right calls with their retention?

Following a disappointing season, CSK’s retention list reflected a shift toward a long-term vision. The franchise retained promising youngsters Ayush Mhatre, Dewald Brevis, and Urvil Patel, alongside core players such as skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad, Shivam Dube, and the iconic MS Dhoni. In a major move, they also secured Sanju Samson via trade from Rajasthan Royals, significantly strengthening their top-order options.

On the other hand, CSK parted ways with Rachin Ravindra, Devon Conway, Shaik Rasheed, Andre Siddarth, and Vansh Bedi. The most notable decisions were trading out Ravindra Jadeja and Sam Curran, two premier all-rounders who were integral to the team’s balance. Their departure leaves CSK with the task of recruiting impactful all-rounders to restore depth and maintain flexibility in both batting and bowling.

Conclusion

Assessing CSK after the retention window, the franchise appears to have made bold yet necessary decisions. Prioritising a transition phase, investing in youth, and reshaping the squad signals their intent to rebuild strongly. With the right additions, CSK could emerge far more competitive in the next IPL season.
