Sean Williams has been named in Zimbabwe’s 16-member squad for the three-match T20I series against Sri Lanka. The experienced campaigner last featured in a T20I in May 2024. The series is scheduled to commence on Wednesday, September 3.

Williams captained the ODI squad in the recently-concluded two-match series in place of Craig Ervine. Ervine suffered a Grade II strain in his left calf as well as a chronic and recurring Grade I strain in his right calf. He registered scores of 57 and 20 and bowling figures of 1/26 and 0/35 in the first and second ODI, respectively.

Brendan Taylor has also been included in the Sikandar Raza-led unit. Taylor recently made his international comeback after nearly four years in the Test and ODI formats. There are four notable omissions from the tri-series squad against New Zealand and South Africa – Newman Nyamhuri, Wessly Madhevere, Vincent Masekesa and Tafadzwa Tsiga.

The upcoming three-match series will serve as a crucial preparation for Zimbabwe ahead of the imminent ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Africa Qualifier. Only two teams from the Africa Qualifier will make it to the T20 World Cup next year.

The Chevrons lost a hard-fought 50-over series, losing first ODIs by seven runs and the second by five wickets. Despite a number of players performing well, the hosts fell short in both matches.

The one-day leg was played at the Harare Sports Club in Harare and the T20Is will be played at the same venue. Sri Lanka will head over to the upcoming Asia Cup in the United Arab Emirates following the conclusion of the ongoing series.
