Best Combined XI from WPL 2024

Mumbai Indians defeated Delhi Capitals in an exciting final to bring the inaugural Women’s Premier League (WPL 2023), to a spectacular close. The star-studded MI lineup produced a few pivotal individual performances that helped MI win the inaugural WPL championship. The competition that will alter the course of women’s cricket offered everything a fan might have desired.

Facilitating Indian women’s performances was one of the main goals in starting the Women’s Premier League. Although we did witness some impressive individual performances by Indian ladies, the foreign women’s overall performance throughout the event left a lasting impact. Though the results might not have met the expectations of the BCCI and supporters, women’s cricket is off to a good start.

1. Hayley Matthews

Hayley Matthews emerged as the ‘Player of the Tournament’ for her all-round performances that won Mumbai Indians the inaugural title. She took the most wickets in the competition (16) and was awarded the Purple Cap. Mathews also had a strike rate of 126.04 while using the bat, scoring important 271 runs top of the order in 10 games.

2. Shafali Verma

Shafali Verma breathed fire into the tournament with her aggressive batting. She did rather well as the explosive batter scored 252 runs in 9 innings, with the exception of her performance in the championship game. Shafali had the greatest strike rate of any player at 185.3. She scored two excellent centuries with her individual bests in the form of 84 off 45 balls and 76 off 28 balls, respectively.

3. Meg Lanning

Meg Lanning led by example for Delhi Capitals Women’s team. The legendary Australian was the tournament’s top batter and the recipient of the orange cap. Lanning had an amazing average of 49.28 and scored 345 runs in just 9 innings to finish as the tournament’s top run scorer. Despite only hitting two fifty, the charismatic skipper was one of the most reliable players, scoring well seven times out of nine.

4. Natalie Sciver Brunt

The Mumbai Indians’ victory in winning the trophy was primarily due to the contribution of knockouts star, Natalie Sciver Brunt. Her performance’s main feature was her amazing fifties in the eliminator and the grand final. With 332 runs overall, Sciver Brunt was the second-highest run-getter. She also had 10 wickets under her belt and was an excellent striker with the ball.

5. Harmanpreet Kaur

Harmanpreet Kaur, the best Indian batter in the competition, guided her team with some outstanding hits when things became tough. Even after some incredible top-order performances, Kaur, batting in the middle order, nonetheless scored 281 runs with a strike rate of 135.1 during the tournament. In the process, Harmanpreet also made history by becoming the first player in the WPL to captain her team to a trophy.

6. Richa Ghosh

The lone member of the RCB team and the team’s keeper Richa Ghosh didn’t have a particularly successful campaign, keeping in mind her lone Indian opponent, Yastika Bhatika, who served as an opener. Richa’s position as a finisher in a top-order-heavy side gives her an advantage, and this season, she should do even better.

7. Amelia Kerr

Amelia, an all-rounder from New Zealand, was another player who contributed immensely to Mumbai Indians Women’s title victory. With 149 runs in seven innings and a maximum score of 45*. Besides, Kerr was the second-highest wicket-taker with 15 wickets overall. She was expected to play a major part again this season like she did in the inaugural edition of the WPL.

8. Deepti Sharma

Ace Indian all-rounder Deepti Sharma did not have too great of a season in the last edition for UP Warriorz. She was good with the ball, scalping nine wickets in nine matches, however, Deepti only managed to score 90 runs with the bat. Hence, fans would be hoping for a better performance from her this season.

9. Sophie Ecclestone

The willy left-arm spinner is one of the best young talents in world cricket. Sophie Ecclestone was also one of the finest bowlers of the Tata WPL 2023. Sophie’s effort was essential to UP Warriorz’s advancement to the tournament’s final three stages. In nine matches, English all-rounder took 16 wickets in addition to making significant contributions with the bat as well.

10. Issy Wong

Issy Wong, an English pacer who represented Mumbai Indians Women in the augural edition of the WPL, was another star player who grabbed attention during the marquee tournament. In addition to registering the first-ever WPL hat trick, she concluded the competition with the best results of 4/15 and 15 scalps in totality. Like Natalie Sciver Brunt, Issy Wong produced several outstanding performances during the knockout stages.

11. Saika Ishaque

Saika Ishaque turned out to be one of the best discoveries of the first Women’s Premier League (WPL). Moreover, the youngster also proved to be the best Indian bowler in the competition. She ended the 2023 Women’s Premier League season as the second-highest wicket-taker with 15 wickets from 9 appearances. Besides, Saika Ishaque also maintained a decent economy of 7.00 during the WPL.
