In the second ODI between Bangladesh and West Indies, the visitors created a world record with their bowling strategy. The Shai Hope-led side bowled all 50 overs with spinners, leaving their lone pacer, Justin Greaves, unused. The decision was reportedly tactical, based on the nature of the wicket at the Shere Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Dhaka on Tuesday, October 21.

Previously, the most overs bowled by spinners in a men’s ODI was 44, achieved multiple times by Sri Lanka. In women’s ODIs, Sri Lanka bowled 47 overs of spin against India in 2004. West Indies’ all-spin approach in this match set a new benchmark in both men’s and women’s ODIs.

The move may have been influenced by Bangladesh spinner Rishad Hossain’s 6/35 in the series opener. However, fans and experts were surprised when Hope preferred Alick Athanaze over Greaves, the lone seamer in the line-up. The pitch, too, was extremely helpful for the spinners, with a lot of moisture visibly evident on the surface.

The pitch proved favourable for spin as Bangladesh batted first, posting 213/7 in 50 overs. Gudakesh Motie took three wickets for 65 runs in his full quota, but the standout was Athanaze, who bowled 10 overs for just 14 runs while claiming two wickets, the most economical and efficient figures of the innings on Tuesday.

During the chase, the visiting skipper Hope anchored the innings with 53 off 67 balls, keeping West Indies in contention. The visitors also finished on 213, leading to a super over. Batting first, West Indies scored 10 runs, and Akeal Hosein restricted Bangladesh to 9, securing a thrilling win and levelling the series.

Both teams will now face off again on October 23 at the same venue for the series decider. Fans will be keen to see whether West Indies continue their all-spin strategy, or if the teams opt for a different approach in the final match.
