Ayush Badoni says he is ready to play any role for India, shares Virat Kohli’s advice

Ayush Badoni received an ODI call-up for India’s New Zealand series after Washington Sundar sustained acute-onset discomfort in his left lower rib area while bowling during the first match at the BCA Stadium, Vadodara, on January 12, 2026. Badoni was named as Sundar’s replacement and linked up with the squad in Rajkot for the second ODI. The selection reflected India’s need for a sixth bowling option, with the team seeking a player who could bowl 4-5 overs.

Badoni, who represents Delhi in domestic cricket and plays for Lucknow Super Giants in the Indian Premier League, had scored 693 runs from 27 List A matches at an average of 36.47 before his call-up. The 26-year-old batter has also worked with Indian head coach Gautam Gambhir, who was LSG’s mentor in 2022 and 2023. During his India A appearances, Badoni bowled in every match and was tried in the middle order, demonstrating his value as a multi-skilled player.

Badoni emphasised his willingness to adapt to any situation the Indian team required of him. His recent domestic cricket had seen him open the innings as well as bat in the middle order, showcasing his positional flexibility. The batter spoke about his selection and the expectations placed on him as a replacement for an injured player.

“I didn’t have any chat with the selectors. Even in India A, they tried me in the middle order and I bowled in every match. I am focusing a lot on my bowling.” Badoni was quoted as saying by India TV.

“I can play any role for the team. I am ready to adapt to any situation and give everything the team needs from me. I opened as well this time around and so, I am ready for anything,” he added.

Kohli’s guidance during domestic cricket

Badoni shared insights into his interactions with Virat Kohli during domestic cricket in 2025 and 2026. The two players shared the Delhi dressing room during Ranji Trophy matches and Vijay Hazare Trophy matches. Kohli offered guidance to Badoni on ways to dominate opposition bowlers and how to maintain a positive mindset both on and off the field.

“We didn’t talk a lot about batting. Mostly, we used to have a lot of fun. I played with him in the Vijay Hazare Trophy and also in the Ranji Trophy, so it was just fun being around and playing cricket with him. We did speak about cricket at times, though. He used to tell me ways to dominate the opposition bowlers and how to be positive on and off the field,” Badoni revealed.

Badoni’s approach to his international opportunity reflected his focus on continuous improvement and adaptability. His willingness to bowl regularly and contribute across multiple roles positioned him as a valuable squad member for India’s ODI plans moving forward.
