Vijay Hazare – very few names transcend the greatness of this man. He was an absolute legend of the game in India. Vijay Hazare was one the first crowd pullers when it came to Cricket. The all-rounder is known for heralding a new age of Indian cricket. Let us take a look at some of his greatest batting performances in Test cricket. 

164* vs England, 1951

Vijay Hazare played his best Test innings against England in Delhi. The Indian team restricted England to 203 runs courtesy of Sadu Shinde and Vinoo Mankad’s bowling efforts. India’s impressive start in the match was consolidated by Vijay Hazare. The Indian captain stitched a massive partnership with Vijay Merchant, putting India in a comfortable position. Hazare stayed unbeaten until the innings was declared and went back with 164 runs to his name. India ended up with 418 runs in the first innings. 

155 vs England, 1951

After the century in the first Test in Delhi, Hazare smashed another ton in the second match of the same Test series, at Brabourne. The Indians were batting first and it was once again the Indian skipper who took the responsibility. He scored 155 runs and his partnership with the opener Pankaj Roy carried India to a formidable total of 485 runs in the first innings. 

146* vs Pakistan, 1952

The arch-rivals Pakistan toured India for the first time in 1952. The third match of the 5-match Test series was played at the Brabourne Stadium. In reply to Pakistan’s 186 in the first innings, India posted 387 runs on the board before declaring the innings. Vijay Hazare played an instrumental role in that impressive batting display with his unbeaten 146 runs. India eventually went on to win the match comfortably by 10 wickets. 

145 vs Australia, 1948

The 1947/48 Australian tour gave Vijay Hazare legendary status. He batted brilliantly on that tour and this is one of his best batting performances down under. In the fourth Test of the series, Australia scored a massive 674 runs in the first innings. The Indian batting stalwart scored 145 runs in the second innings to save the match after India was forced to follow on after the first innings. Hazare was the lone warrior but the lack of support resulted in a crushing defeat for India. 

134* vs West Indies, 1948

In the second match of the Test series between India and West Indies in 1948, Vijay Hazare played a match-saving innings for the home team. The visitors forced a follow-on after the Indian batting order crumbled chasing 629 runs posted by West Indies. In the second innings, Vijay Hazare stood tall and took the match to a stalemate. His century and partnership with Rusi Modi ensured India’s great escape.
