Australian batting stalwart Steve Smith retired from ODI format after the loss to India in the first semi-finals of the Champions Trophy. In what was his last match in the format, Smith scored 73 runs with the bat and helped Australia reach a competitive 264 on the board. Once the match ended it was a huge shock when Smith decided to call time on his ODI career and look to focus on Test and T20I cricket.
With this Australia lost yet another member who was considered one of the best. Aaron Finch and David Warner had already retired and with Smith gone the team has a huge gaping hole. Smith in fact was the captain of the side having stepped into lead the side in the absence of Pat Cummins. In the first match, Australia beat England before their next two games were washed out due to rain.
With just two years left for the ODI World Cup in South Africa, the Australians who are the defending champions will have to find a replacement for Smith. The 35-year-old brought a wealth of experience not just with the bat but also as the senior most member of the side.
