Three reasons why South Africa can win the WTC Finals

Three reasons why South Africa can win the WTC Finals

South Africa will play their first-ever WTC Final when they take on Australia at the Home of Cricket, Lord’s, for the Test mace. It will be a tough challenge for the Proteas, who will be against the number 1 ranked team and the defending champions in the big match of the 2023-25 cycle’s last match.

Under Temba Bavuma and Aiden Markram, South Africa achieved good results to make it to the final. However, the one-off Test against Australia will be as tough as it could get. Having said that, SA might have some factors that could give them a chance to claim the WTC mace.

Here are the three factors that might be in SA’s favour in winning their maiden WTC title.

Bowling attack

South Africa’s bowling attack is currently one of the best in the world. Kagiso Rabada, Marco Jansen, Keshav Maharaj, Anrich Nortje, Duanne Oliver, and Nandre Burger form an attack with a lot of variety.

Rabada can extract extra bounce from the surface with a natural outswinger. Marco Jansen and Nandre Burger provide the left-arm angle with their swing bowling. Anrich Nortje, as the sheer fast bowler, can make a difference to their attack, with Maharaj to back him up with his spin.

Rejuvenation under Temba Bavuma

Under Temba Bavuma, SA seemed to have gained good momentum as a Test side. When the Proteas had to win all of their series in the last few months to qualify for the final, they did. Bavuma played a key role both as a skipper and as a batter.

South Africa did not have a good batter before Bavuma. However, things seem to have fallen into place with pieces coming together. Their batting unit now has stability with the likes of Bavuma, Markram, Ryan Rickelton, Tristan Stubbs, Kyle Verreyne, and David Beddingham. Their bowling is one of the best in the world, as mentioned before.

2025, the year of unpredictables

When one thinks of South Africa, the foremost thing that comes to mind is their knack for ‘choking.’ There have been some such teams that couldn’t brace themselves for the big stages in the past.

However, 2025 has been a year in which such teams have won titles. In football, Tottenham and other clubs did it, while in cricket, RCB won their maiden title. If everything goes well, with luck taking SA’s side, they might well win the Test match.
