Three reasons why India lost their first Test match against England 

England easily defeated India on Day 5 of the first Test match at Headingley, Leeds, after chasing down a huge 371-run total.  England now takes a 1-0 series lead. New captain Shubman Gill’s side had five centuries overall, compared to England’s two. 

With impressive scores of 471 and 364 in the two innings, respectively, India placed pressure on the hosts and dominated most of the match. But failed to restrict England as they won the match. Hence, on that note, we look at three reasons why India lost their first Test match against England. 

1. Twice batting order collapsed:

A major part of India’s defeat in the opening Test match was the batting order’s failure. Despite playing his first Test after a lengthy absence, Karun Nair was unable to support India in the batting. In both innings, India got off to a good start with its openers and middle order, but Shardul Thakur and Ravindra Jadeja didn’t score. Jadeja scored 11 runs and Thakur scored 1 run in the first inning. Jadeja gave some hope while Thakur failed again in the second innings.

2. Dependent on Jasprit Bumrah

India’s bowling looked too reliant on Jasprit Bumrah. The team was heavily dependent on Jasprit Bumrah, who took five wickets in the first innings. However, no other bowler stood him up to support him and he was able to get a breakthrough in the first innings. However, he was unable to make much headway in the second innings, and England’s batsmen took control of the match. 

3. Poor fielding from the Indian side:

The poor fielding by Yashavi Jaiswal is another reason for the defeat. Jaiswal dropped four catches, which gave England batters an opportunity to capitalise on it. Rishabh Pant also had a bad day with gloves behind the stumps. He also missed a few stumbles in the match.
