T20 World Cup History: Top 3 Highest Run Scorers for India

India have been one of the most consistent teams in T20 World Cup history, having won the inaugural edition in 2007 by defeating Pakistan and most recently lifting the 2024 T20 World Cup trophy after defeating South Africa in the Caribbean and the USA. Over the years, the Men in Blue have maintained a win percentage of 67.3 in the tournament, making them a formidable force in the shortest format.

The 2026 edition of the T20 World Cup is set to begin on February 7 and will be co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka, featuring 20 teams. India enters as the defending champions and will be looking to claim their third title. Traditionally, Indian pitches have been batter-friendly, and this World Cup is expected to be no different, with many matches likely to see scores exceeding the 200-run mark. Over the years, India’s batting has been led by some legendary players.

Here let us take a look at the top three run-getters for India in T20 World Cup history:

India has produced many great cricketers, but few have been as ambitious and consistent as Virat Kohli. He combined the technical mastery of Sachin Tendulkar with world-class fitness and became the ultimate all-format accumulator, making even the most challenging chases look effortless. As a batter and captain, he set new standards for consistency and performance.

In T20 Internationals overall, Kohli has scored 4188 runs in 125 matches at an average of 48.69, including one century and 38 fifties. In T20 World Cup tournaments, he has amassed 1292 runs in 35 games at an astonishing average of 58.72, standing as India’s all-time highest run-scorer in the event.

Rohit Sharma, known for his elegant strokeplay and power-hitting, emerged from Mumbai as the heir apparent to India’s batting greats of the 2000s. His patience and persistence helped him establish himself as one of white-ball cricket’s most destructive batters. Rohit took over as India’s captain in all formats in 2022 and led the team to the T20 World Cup title in 2024, ending a 13-year wait for ICC silverware.

He also became the first male cricketer to play over 150 T20Is, though he retired from the format following India’s 2024 T20 World Cup triumph. In T20 World Cup history, Rohit has scored 1220 runs in 47 games, including 12 fifties. In overall T20 cricket, he has scored 4231 runs, making him one of the most prolific Indian batters in the shortest format.
