Sri Lankan World Cup winner Kumar Dharmasena was born today in 1971

In the world of cricket we have celebrated a lot of legends in the game of cricket but this time we are going to talk about some underrated stars in the game. This is the day we talk about Kumar Dharmasena who has just turned 53 today and is currently one of the top umpires in the game of cricket he has been one of the main umpires in 159 matches where he showcased some great decisions as an official.

However, even though we know Dharmasena as the man who raises the dreaded finger, we also have to remember that he has been an international cricketer as well. Dharmasena who was born on 24th April 1971 made his debut as an international cricketer for Sri Lanka at the age of 22 in 1993 vs South Africa in Test matches and made his ODI debut one year later. Together Dharmasena has played 172 international games and has taken more than 200 wickets. This was a decent career for the off-spinner already.

Even though Dharmasena had not reached the legendary status as a cricketer, it was still a great career and he was also part of the triumphant World Cup 1996. Even though Dharmasena was not amongst the highest wicket-takers in the game, he still managed to keep a lid on the scoring, bowled economical spells and took some big wickets at times as well. This played a role in keeping the batters quiet in the middle overs and played a major role in Sri Lanka winning the trophy that year.

This has been a great journey for the cricketer who was part of one of the most triumphant World Cups for his nation and now has come so far as to officiate the same World Cup games. He has managed to be one of the iconic figures on the cricket field even after retirement and we will always remember him for his triumphs and great decision-making skills in the game which we respect as great cricket fans.
