He was making his debut in Test cricket in this match and delivered the best performance of his Test career on his debut. New Zealand was chasing a massive target of 431 runs in the second innings but the task was made impossible by Sami. He picked up five wickets to break the spine of the Kiwi batting order. Eventually, Pakistan won the match by 299 runs and the debutant was awarded the player of the match for his outstanding bowling effort.

His 5-wicket haul forced the Kiwi batting unit to surrender.

Mohammad Sami delivered this bowling spell against Zimbabwe in the first Test of the series between the two teams at Harare. It resulted in a convincing victory for Pakistan and the young fast bowler had an important contribution in that. In the first innings, Pakistan could only post 285 runs on the board and the visitors needed a good bowling performance in order to take a lead at the end of the first innings. Sami stepped up with his four wickets and helped Pakistan get a comfortable lead in the first innings.
