OTD | Yashasvi Jaiswal’s debut ton helped India to convincing win over the West Indies in 2023

India beat the West Indies in the first Test by an innings and 141 runs on the July 14, 2023, thanks to a fine ton by the debutant Yashasvi Jaiswal. Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja starred with the ball, while Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli smashed a ton and a fifty, respectively.

West Indies batted first and were reduced to just 150 in 64.3 overs. Alick Athanaze was the only batter who troubled the Indian bowlers with his 47(99). Ashwin was the pick of the bowlers with his spell of 24.3-6-60-5. At the other end, Jadeja bowled well and claimed 3/26 in his spell of 14 overs, including seven maiden overs.

In challenging conditions, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Rohit Sharma batted well for India against a quality attack featuring Kemar Roach, Alzarri Joseph, Jason Holder, Jomel Warrican, and Rahkeem Cornwall. The wicket was slow and the Indian openers applied themselves to score a hundred each.

While Rohit scored 103(221), Jaiswal scored 171(387) on debut and was highly impressive. Virat Kohli’s 76(182) and Jadeja’s unbeaten 37*(82) meant India scored 421/5 before declaring their innings. India’s massive lead helped them to run through the West Indian batters even in the second innings.

Ashwin became much more deadly than he was in the first innings, as the slow nature of the surface brought the best out of him. The right-arm off-spinner claimed 7/71 in 21.3 overs, including seven maidens. Jadeja chipped in with a couple of wickets, as India dismissed the West Indies for just 130 and won by an innings and 141 runs to go 1-0 up in the series. Jaiswal won the Player of the Match award for his batting performance on debut.
