OTD: Shane Warne’s Gabba masterclass helped Australia rout Pakistan in 1995

OTD: Shane Warne's Gabba masterclass helped Australia rout Pakistan in 1995

On November 13, 1995, the cricket world witnessed one of Shane Warne’s most dominant performances as Australia crushed Pakistan by an innings and 126 runs in the opening Test at the Gabba, Brisbane. The legendary leg-spinner produced a bowling exhibition of the highest order, finishing the match with stunning figures of 11 wickets for 77 runs, cementing his status as one of the greatest match-winners in Test history.

Batting first, Australia posted a commanding total of 463 runs as skipper Mark Taylor led from the front with a solid 69, while David Boon (54), Mark Waugh (59), and Greg Blewett (57) all made valuable contributions. The highlight of the innings, however, was Waugh’s unbeaten 112, showcasing his trademark composure. For Pakistan, Waqar Younis was the most successful bowler, taking three wickets for 101 runs, but the visitors struggled to contain Australia’s deep batting lineup.

In reply, Pakistan collapsed dramatically in their first innings, managing only 97 runs. Warne spun a web of destruction, claiming remarkable figures of 7 for 23 in just 16.1 overs, including nine maidens. His victims included top-order batters Aamer Sohail, Ramiz Raja, and Inzamam-ul-Haq, as well as key middle-order players Basit Ali, Moin Khan, and both Akram bowlers, Wasim and Mohammad. Warne’s precision, variation, and accuracy left Pakistan completely dismantled.

Forced to follow on, Pakistan showed more resistance in their second innings, reaching 240 runs. Aamer Sohail narrowly missed a century with 99, while Inzamam-ul-Haq contributed a fighting 62. Yet, Warne once again proved too good, taking 4 for 54, dismissing Saleem Malik, Wasim Akram, Waqar Younis, and Mohammad Akram. Glenn McGrath provided strong support with 4 for 76, sealing Pakistan’s fate.

Australia’s comprehensive victory set the tone for the three-match series, and Warne was deservedly named Player of the Series for his 19 wickets. His spellbinding performance at the Gabba remains one of the finest displays of leg-spin bowling in Test cricket history.
