OTD Sanjay Bangar was born in 1972

Sanjay Bangar was born on October 11, 1972, in Beed, Maharashtra. He played one game for the Maharashtra Under-15 and moved to Mumbai to play cricket at the age of 15. He faced tough competition from players of his age in Mumbai and hence had to return to Maharashtra.

After playing for the youth teams of Maharashtra and Mumbai, Bangar managed to make his first-class debut with Railways in 1993. He was a part of the Railways team that qualified for the final of the Ranji Trophy in the 2000-01 season, which the Railways lost. Railways qualified for the final of the next edition of the tournament and defeated Baroda this time.

After playing eight domestic seasons, Bangar first got the India call-up when England came touring in the year 2001-02. He was a part of the Board President’s XI that faced England and took seven wickets, including a five-wicket haul in the second innings.

Bangar made his Test debut in the first Test in Mohali and played a total of 12 Test matches for India, scoring 470 runs at an average of 29.37. He hit one century and three half-centuries. His only century came against Zimbabwe in 2002. Bangar made his ODI debut against England in Chennai in 2002. He played a total of 15 ODI games for India and amassed 180 runs.

Bangar scored over 8000 runs in first-class matches at an average of 33.13. He took 300 wickets as well at an average of 31.13 in 165 first-class matches. Bangar is one of the few players who have scored 6000 runs and taken 200 wickets in the Ranji Trophy.

In August 2014, Bangar was appointed the batting coach of the Indian team. He served in various positions for the Indian team as his stint came to an end after the 2019 World Cup.
