OTD Sachin Tendulkar scored his 100th century in 2012

In this article, we will discuss the On This Day: Sachin Tendulkar scored his 100th century in 2012. There are many records of players scoring centuries. One of which seems like a next to impossible target to break is the record of 100 centuries held by none other than, Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar. He played for twenty-four long years to reach this milestone. On this day in 2012, Sachin smashed his 100th ton and set a benchmark that probably no one would be able to match.

A long wait ends

Millions of fans in India and across the globe were waiting for the great man to achieve the unthinkable but destiny had kept him waiting for a long time. Finally, the moment came in the 2012 Asia Cup when Sachin Tendulkar raised his bat and looked into the skies for one last time in his international career.

During a match against Bangladesh in a group-stage of the Asia Cup 2012 in Mirpur. The hosts elected to field first after winning an important toss. Bangladesh also had initial success as they got an early wicket in the first powerplay. Opener Gautam Gambhir had to go back without scoring a lot. The young Virat Kohli stitched a valuable partnership with his idol, Sachin Tendulkar. The duo added 148 runs to compensate for the early setback. Kohli scored 66 runs before he was dismissed by Abdur Razzak. However, Kohli’s departure did not have any effect on the Little Master and he went on to complete his 100th century with a single off Shakib Al Hasan’s delivery. With that single an arduous journey of greatness lasting for more than two decades culminated.

India posted 289 runs on the board at the end of the first innings which is a courtesy of a historic century from Tendulkar and half-centuries from Virat Kohli and Suresh Raina. Chasing this target was a massive task for Bangladesh but the home team emphatically did the job, winning the match by 5 wickets. Senior players like Tamim Iqbal, Shakib Al Hasan, and Mushfiqur Rahim made crucial contributions to guide their team to a memorable victory.
