OTD: R Ashwin's career-best 7 for 59 against New Zealand in 2016

Ravichandran Ashwin, on this day in 2016, took his Test career-best figures of 7/59 in the third Test between India and New Zealand that was played at the Holkar Stadium in Indore. This Test was played from October 8 to 11 and saw India winning by 321 runs to pocket the three-match series 3-0.

India won the toss and chose to bat first as Virat Kohli made 211 and Ajinkya Rahane made 188 to take India to a massive 557/5d. For New Zealand, Trent Boult and Jeetan Patel took two wickets each.

New Zealand started well in their first innings, with openers Martin Guptill (72) and Tom Latham (53) adding 118 runs for the first wicket. R Ashwin then sprang into action, demolishing the Kiwi top order, taking 6/81. Latham (53), Kane Williamson (8), Ross Taylor (0), Luke Ronchi (0), James Neesham (71), and Trent Boult (0) were Ashwin’s victims in the first innings, as New Zealand was bowled out for 299.

India batted again and posted 216/3d, with Cheteshwar Pujara scoring 101* and Gautam Gambhir making 50 to set New Zealand a target of 475 runs to win the Test and avoid a whitewash.

Ashwin picked his career-best 7/59 in the second innings as he demolished the middle and lower order as well. He dismissed Williamson (27), Taylor (32), Ronchi (15), Mitchell Santner (14), Jeetan Patel, Matt Henry, and Trent Boult to complete the seven-wicket haul. He took a match haul of 13/140 and was awarded both the Player of the Match and Player of the Series awards.
