OTD: Nathan Lyon was born in 1987

On this day in 1987, legendary off-spinner Nathan Lyon was born in Young, New South Wales. Nearly two decades after his debut, Lyon stands as the most successful Australian spinner in history and the nation’s biggest spin bowler since Shane Warne. As Australia enters the Ashes 2025-26, Lyon once again has huge responsibilities on his shoulders, with many former players predicting that the upcoming series could further strengthen his legacy.

Before he became the backbone of the Test attack, Lyon was a curator at the Adelaide Oval, working groundstaff shifts while bowling off-spin on the side. His talent was first noticed by South Australia’s Big Bash coach Darren Berry in 2010-11, leading to a transition from T20s to first-class cricket. Within seven months, he made his Test debut.

His memorable debut in Galle in 2011 saw him dismiss Kumar Sangakkara on his very first delivery and finish with figures of 5/34. Since then, he has surpassed Hugh Trumble’s tally in 2015 to become Australia’s most successful Test off-spinner. In December 2023, he entered the elite 500-wicket club, a milestone previously achieved only by Shane Warne and Glenn McGrath among Australians.

However, the cricketer endured setbacks, including being dropped twice in 2013, once in India and again during the Ashes in England. Despite being replaced by then-teenager Ashton Agar in the first two Ashes Tests, Lyon returned by the third match and became a permanent member. By 2023, he had played 100 consecutive Tests.

His standout achievements include two eight-wicket hauls in India, 8/15 in Bengaluru (2017) and 8/64 in Indore (2023). At home, his 400th Test wicket came against England at the Gabba in 2021, putting him in rare company behind only Warne and McGrath on Australia’s all-time list.

Notably, Greg Matthews recently stated that Lyon could define his legacy in the 2025-26 Ashes, calling him Australia’s most important bowler heading into the series. With 562 Test wickets and a career spanning 14 years, he stands second only to Shane Warne among Australia’s greatest spinners.
