OTD: Mohammad Kaif was born in 1980

Mohammad Kaif was born on December 1, 1980, in Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh in India. He was the captain of the Indian team that won the Under-19 World Cup 2000 and received an India callup soon after. Kaif was also a part of the Indian squad that was the joint-winners of the 2002 Champions Trophy.

Kaif made his Test debut in March 2000 against South Africa, while his ODI debut came against England in January 2022. He played a total of 13 Test matches for India and amassed 624 runs at an average of 32.84, including one century and three half-centuries. In 125 ODI games, he made 2753 runs at an average of 32.01 and a strike rate of 72.03. He scored two centuries and 17 half-centuries in ODIs.

Kaif last played an international game for India in 2006 and announced his retirement from all formats on July 13, 2008. He was one of the first few cricketers from Uttar Pradesh to play for India. During the time he played ODIs for India, he was the third-highest run-scorer in the middle-order.

During the 2003 World Cup, Kaif took four catches against Sri Lanka, which is still a record of the most catches in a World Cup game by an Indian player.

Kaif was picked by the Rajasthan Royals in the IPL 2008 auction and was the most expensive player for the team. He played for Punjab Kings during the 2010 season and for the Royal Challengers Bengaluru in 2011 and 2012. Overall, he played 29 matches in the IPL and made 259 runs at a strike rate of 103.60. In February 2017, Kaif was appointed the assistant coach by the now-defunct Gujarat Lions franchise in the IPL. He served as the assistant coach of Delhi Capitals from 2019 to 2020.
