OTD: Jhulan Goswami was born in 1982

Jhulan Goswami was born in Nadia, Bengal, On November 25, 1982. Renowned as one of the most clinical bowlers in the world, she has earned accolades through her remarkable control and subtle variations off the pitch. Over her illustrious career, Goswami became the highest wicket-taker in women’s ODI history and now mentors a young generation of fast bowlers in India.

The 42-year-old was earmarked for leadership when she was named vice-captain ahead of India’s tour of England in 2006. She played a pivotal role in India’s Test series win, including their first-ever victory against England. In the first Test at Leicester, she scored a valuable fifty as a nightwatcher and followed it with career-best match figures of 10/78 in the second Test at Taunton.

Her exceptional performances earned her the Player of the Series award, and she was later named ICC Women’s Player of the Year in 2007, a year when no Indian male cricketer won an individual award. Soon after, Goswami was elevated to captain of the national team. In recognition of her achievements, she received the prestigious Arjuna Award in 2010 and the Padma Shri two years later.
