OTD | Jasprit Bumrah's match figures of 9 for 86 helped India register a famous win in Melbourne in 2018

On this Day (December 30), Jasprit Bumrah’s impressive match figures of 9 for 86 played a key role in India’s historic victory. Six years ago in 2018, Virat Kohli-led India registered a historic 137-run win against Australia in the Boxing Day Test at the iconic MCG in Melbourne. The star of the match happened to be none other than the star Indian pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah, who won the ‘Player of the Match award for his outstanding bowling performance throughout the match.

Bumrah scalped 6 wickets in the first innings, dismantling Australia’s mighty batting attack followed by claiming 3 wickets in the second innings to secure the famous win for India. His 9-wicket haul played a decisive role in this all-important clash for the tourists.

Here’s how Jasprit Bumrah dismantled the Aussie batting attack

Speaking of the entire action of the match, the then-India skipper, Virat Kohli won the toss and asked his batters to take the charge. Batting first, India posted a big total of 437 runs for the loss of 7 wickets before declaring their first innings courtesy of veteran number 3 batter Cheteshwar Pujara’s century (106 runs). His century was followed by skipper Kohli’s 82 runs and Rohit Sharma’s 63 runs.

In response to India’s 437 runs, Australia couldn’t survive long against the Indian bowling attack led by Jasprit Bumrah and the hosts were bundled at the score of just 151 runs, with Jasprit Bumrah picking 6 wickets at just 33 runs. Later in the second innings, Indian batters fumbled a bit before Kohli declared the second innings at India’s score of 106 runs for the loss of 8 wickets.

Tim Paine’s men were given the massive target of 399 runs by India to chase down in the fourth innings of the game. Indian bowlers dominated the Aussie batters once again in the second innings, bundling them at the score of 261 runs to win the game by a huge margin of 137 runs. Jasprit Bumrah claimed 3 wickets at just 53 runs in 19 overs in the second innings.

India took a lead of 2-1 in the four-match Border Gavaskar Trophy 2018, following the fourth Test at Sydney ending in a draw, with India winning the series by 2-1.
