OTD Jasprit Bumrah's 5 for 7 helped India register their biggest away win in the match against West Indies in 2019

On 25 August 2019, West Indies were blown away by Jasprit Bumrah’s menacing pace and Ajinkya Rahane’s gritty knocks, helping India record their biggest away win by runs. The Men in Blue have emerged into a dominant pace attack over the last few years and this series against Windies was a prime example.

India were asked to bat first in the opening Test at North Sound and posted 297 runs despite their top-order failed to shine. Opener KL Rahul (44) got off to a strong start but could not capitalise on it. It was Rahane who steadied the ship by stitching crucial partnerships with the lower order. The right-hander scored 81 runs off 163 balls with the help of 10 boundaries. Ravindra Jadeja also contributed his share with 58 runs.

In reply, the Windies batters put a collective effort but could not surpass India’s first-innings score. Ishant Sharma’s five-fer and two wickets each from Mohammed Shami and Jadeja restricted the hosts to 222. Bumrah could pick up only one wicket this time.

The Indian batters put up much more effort in the second innings and it was Rahane who once again led the charge with a brilliant hundred. His 102 off 242 balls, Virat Kohli’s half-century and Hanuma Vihari’s 93 helped the visitors post 343/7 before declaring.

Defending a mammoth target of 419 runs, Bumrah ensured that the Carribean side did not pose a single threat to his team. The right-arm pacer removed openers Kraigg Brathwaite and John Campbell early on to rock the foundation of the hosts.

Wickets continued to fall as the Indian pace trio of Bumrah, Ishant and Shami went on to trouble the opposition with their sheer pace. Bumrah was the wrecker in chief as he picked up five-wicket hauls conceding just 7 runs in his eight overs. The Windies were bundled out for just 100 runs, handing Kohli and Co. a famous win of 318 runs.
