OTD Ishant Sharma was born in 1988

It was on this day, September 2, in 1988 that Ishant Sharma was born. He remains only the second Indian fast bowler to play 100 or more Tests, behind the legendary Kapil Dev. He was also a member of the 2013 ICC Champions Trophy-winning Indian team.

Ishant was born in Delhi on September 2, 1988 and thanks to his height of 6 feet 4 inches, he took to fast bowling like fish to water. He played for India on the U19 tours of England and Pakistan in 2006-07 and was called up for the Indian team in 2007.

He replaced the injured Munaf Patel for the tour of Bangladesh and made his India debut in May 2007 in Dhaka at the age of 18 years. Famously, Ishant was sleeping in his room when Virat Kohli, his then Delhi roommate, went to him and broke the news of his Indian team selection to him by kicking him awake.

After a few insignificant performances in England, he made a name for himself with five wickets against Pakistan in the Bengaluru Test in 2007. This earned him a spot for the Australia tour in 2008 and Ishant gained fame thanks to his brilliant spell to Australia captain Ricky Ponting and earning his wicket during the Perth Test.

Ishant also made his India ODI debut in 2007 against South Africa in Ireland and his T20I debut came in 2008 against Australia at the MCG.

One of his brilliant Test performances and best bowling figures came in India’s only Test win in the 2014 England tour at Lord’s. He bowled bouncers with the old ball and picked 7/74, after receiving advice from MS Dhoni.

He was in the highlight also when he bowled the final over of the 2013 ICC Champions Trophy against England and won the game for India. He remained a potent force for India in Tests, while his ODI career came to an end in 2016, where he played 80 games and took 115 wickets with a best of 4/34. He also played 14 T20Is, taking eight wickets, and played in two T20 World Cups as well.

He continued to excel in Tests and was part of India’s historic 2018-19 Test series win, their first-ever in Australia. He shone with Umesh Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Mohammad Shami.

Ishant became the second Indian seamer, and 11th overall, to reach 100 Tests when he took the field against England in 2021 in Ahmedabad. He also played in the ICC WTC 2021 final against New Zealand and his final Test till now came against New Zealand in Kanpur in November 2021.

Ishant has played 105 Tests, taking 311 wickets at an average of 32.40 and best bowling of 7/74 and 10/108. He has also had a decent IPL career, having starting in 2008. He has played 117 matches, taking 96 wickets with a best of 5/12.
