Top 3 wicket-takers in ICC Champions Trophy history

The highly-anticipated ICC Champions Trophy 2025 is set to kick off next month on February 19 with the tournament opener, in which the hosts Pakistan will take on New Zealand. The ninth edition of the tournament has already been in the news headlines for a lot of reasons, be it the controversies or the other stuff. 

Meanwhile, all eyes are on the top players from the top eight cricketing teams, participating in the prestigious cricket quadrennial. The defending champions Pakistan will also be eyeing defending their title against the seven best cricket teams in the world. 

With that said, here we’ll have a look at the leading wicket-takers in the history of the Champions Trophy since the tournament’s inception 26 years ago in 1998. 

The Top 3 wicket-takers in History of ICC Champions Trophy:

Kyle Mills (New Zealand) – 28 wickets

The former Kiwi speedster Kyle Mills made his Champions Trophy debut in the 2002 edition. The star bowler played for the Blackcaps in four editions of the tournaments till the ICC Champions Trophy 2013. He is still the leading wicket-taker in the history of the tournament. 

Mills scalped 28 wickets in 15 innings, with an amazing economy rate of 4.29, including two four-wicket hauls and the best performance of ‘4 wickets at just 30 runs in a match.’ Mills retired from the ODIs in 2015 and didn’t play in the Champions Trophy in 2017. But he still holds the top spot in the list of the tournament’s leading wicket-takers. 

Lasith Malinga (Sri Lanka) – 25 wickets

Former Sri Lanka pacer Lasith Malinga had been one of the stand-out performers with the ball in the history of the ICC Champions Trophy. Malinga made his Champions Trophy for the Islanders in the tournament’s 2006 edition and played till the previous edition of the tournament in 2017. 

Malinga scalped 25 wickets in 16 innings with a decent economy rate of 5.31, including two four-wicket hauls. He recorded his best performance as ‘4 wickets at just 34 runs in a game.’ Malinga holds the second spot in the list of the ‘leading wicket-takers’ in the tournament’s history. 

Muttiah Muralitharan (Sri Lanka) – 24 wickets

One of the all-time bowling greats, Muttiah Muralidaran was part of the Sri Lankan team in the inaugural edition of the Champions Trophy in 1998. He represented his national team in the prestigious cricket quadrennial till the 2009 edition of the tournament. Even after his retirement in 2011, and missing two editions of the tournament, he is still the third leading wicket-taker in the history of the tournament.

Muralidaran scalped 24 wickets in 15 innings with an unbelievable economy rate of just 3.60, including 2 four-wicket hauls. His best performance was also amazing as he picked ‘4 wickets at just 15 runs in a game.’
