OTD: India Hand Afghanistan a Harsh Lesson in Their Test Debut

OTD India Hand Afghanistan a Harsh Lesson in Their Test Debut

June 14, 2018 remains a landmark date in Afghanistan’s cricket history. After years of remarkable progress from refugee camps and associate cricket to the highest level of the game, Afghanistan finally played their first Test match. The occasion, staged at Bengaluru’s M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, was a moment of immense pride for a nation that had risen through the ranks at extraordinary speed. Yet the fairytale many hoped for never materialised. India, the world’s top-ranked Test side at the time, delivered a ruthless display and secured victory by an innings and 262 runs in just two days.

The significance of the occasion was evident long before the first ball was bowled. Afghanistan became the 12th nation to play Test cricket, completing one of the most remarkable journeys the sport has witnessed. Their squad featured several players already familiar to global audiences through limited-overs cricket, none more prominent than legspinner Rashid Khan, whose reputation as one of the world’s most dangerous bowlers had grown rapidly. Against an experienced Indian batting line-up, however, Afghanistan quickly discovered the unique demands of Test cricket.

After winning the toss, India batted with complete authority from the outset. Shikhar Dhawan produced one of the most explosive innings seen in the opening session of a Test match. His century before lunch made him the first Indian batter to reach three figures before the interval on the first day of a Test. Dhawan’s aggression immediately put Afghanistan on the defensive, while Murali Vijay added a century of his own as India piled on the runs. The hosts eventually declared at 474 for 10, having dominated every session.

Much of the attention centred on Rashid Khan, whose duel with India’s batsmen was eagerly anticipated before the match. India refused to allow him any control. The legspinner was consistently attacked and finished with figures of 154 runs conceded from 34.5 overs. It remains one of the most difficult outings of his international career and highlighted the challenge of transitioning from limited-overs success to the sustained pressures of Test cricket against elite opposition.

Afghanistan’s reply never gained momentum. Facing India’s varied bowling attack, they were dismissed for 109 in their first innings. Only brief contributions prevented an even lower total. The gulf between the sides was evident not merely in skill but also in experience. India’s bowlers maintained disciplined lines and lengths, while Afghanistan’s batters struggled to build partnerships or withstand prolonged pressure.

Asked to follow on, Afghanistan fared little better in the second innings. There were moments of resistance, but India remained firmly in control throughout. The visitors were bowled out for 103, leaving their combined total across both innings at just 212 runs. India completed victory by an innings and 262 runs, one of the most comprehensive wins in their Test history.

The match entered the record books for several reasons. It became the shortest completed Test ever played in the subcontinent, finishing inside two days. The second day alone witnessed 24 wickets, the most to fall in a single day of Test cricket since 1902. While the result was one-sided, it did little to diminish the importance of the occasion. Every Test-playing nation has endured difficult beginnings, and Afghanistan’s debut was no exception.

In retrospect, the match serves as both a reminder of India’s strength at the height of their dominance and a milestone in Afghanistan’s remarkable cricketing journey. The scoreline was harsh, but simply taking the field as a Test nation represented an achievement that extended far beyond the result itself.
