OTD | Five-wicket win in Test in Ranchi gave India a 3-1 series lead over England in 2024

OTD | Five-wicket win in Test in Ranchi gave India a 3-1 series lead over England in 2024

After losing by five wickets in the fourth match in Ranchi, England was unable to keep alive their five-match Test series against India. After India won the Test series by an overwhelming 3-1, Ben Stokes’ squad lost the match. India, referred to as Bazball’s last frontier, proved to be a challenging Test match for the Brendon McCullum team, who received harsh criticism for their batting strategy during this series.

After winning a vital toss on a challenging Ranchi pitch, England chose to bat first. With the help of Joe Root’s outstanding century, scored 353 runs in their opening inning. In response, India’s first innings saw them score 307 runs. Despite Jaiswal’s outstanding 73, Jurel was India’s standout player, scoring a tough 90 and establishing invaluable partnerships with Kuldeep and Akash Deep to enable India to cut into England’s advantage.

The England bowler that stood up was Shoaib Bashir, who gave up 119 runs in 44 overs while taking his first five wickets. India bowled out the visitors for a mere 145 runs on Day 3, coming out firing. Ashwin won his 35th five-wicket haul in Test cricket, matching Kumble as the bowler with the most five-wicket hauls in Test cricket. It was another brilliant display of spin bowling by Ashwin.

Despite Rohit’s half-century in the last innings, India lost wickets quickly, letting England get back into the match. Jurel and Shubman Gill, however, calmed the hosts down and put together an undefeated 72-run partnership to win the match. On Day 4, India won by five wickets after chasing down the 192-run mark in 60.5 overs.

India won the 17th consecutive Test series, extending their Test winning streak at home. For India, the series had a rough start. In three games, Rohit Sharma’s squad was without a number of its senior players after losing the opening game in Hyderabad. But in Vizag, Rajkot, and Ranchi, the Indian squad showed a great deal of spirit and won three straight games.
