OTD | David Hussey was born

David Hussey is the younger brother of Australia’s legendary batter Michael Hussey. While Michael was a left-handed batter, David batted right-handed. He was born on July 15, 1977, at Mt Lawley, Perth, Western Australia.

David had to score plenty of runs in domestic cricket to win the trust of the national selectors. He came to prominence after smashing a run-a-ball 212, helping Victoria chase down a record 455 against New South Wales. Hussey made his debut in international cricket on February 1, 2008, versus India in a one-off T20I in Melbourne. While he did not get to bat, he did bowl three overs and picked up the wicket of MS Dhoni.

Later in the year, in July, he made his ODI debut against the West Indies at Warner Park in Basseterre, St Kitts. The right-handed batter scored a crucial 50 off 51 balls to help Australia post a total of 282/8. The West Indies finished on 281/6 as Australia won by one run.

Hussey became a regular member of the Australian team in the shortest format of the game. He played 39 T20Is, scoring 756 runs at an average of 22.91 and a strike rate of 121.35. Meanwhile, in ODI cricket, he amassed 1796 runs at an average of 32.65 and a strike rate of 90.71. Hussey also picked up 18 wickets in ODIs and 19 in T20Is.

Hussey also represented teams like Kolkata Knight Riders, Punjab Kings, and Chennai Super Kings in the IPL. In 64 IPL games, he scored 1291 runs at an average of 26.35 and a strike rate of 122.26. He also bagged eight wickets in the cash-rich league with his off-spin bowling.

Hussey played his last T20I against the West Indies on October 5, 2012. Meanwhile, his final ODI appearance came on January 23, 2013, versus Sri Lanka.
