OTD | Australia beat West Indies to register their record 12th consecutive Test win in 2000

On this day in 2000, Australia won the Perth Test against West Indies and extended their incredible winning streak to 12. On a tricky surface to bat on, the home side claimed a massive win by an innings and 27 runs. It helped them to claim a 2-0 lead in the series. Mark Waugh bagged the POTM award for his amazing hundred on a bouncy WACA surface.

Australia had great confidence coming into the second Test of the series. They had a lead of 1-0 having won the first Test of the series by a bigger margin of an innings and 126 runs at the Gabba. The second Test saw a tricky wicket. But Australia had just the right team to claim a win. West Indies batted first and were reduced to 196 runs. Ridley Jacobs scored an unbeaten 96 for the visiting side.

Australian bowlers collectively bowled well. While Glenn McGrath and Jason Gillespie claimed 3 wickets each, Brett Lee and Stuart Macgill claimed a couple of wickets each. In reply to it, Australia batted well and posted 396/8 before declaring their innings. Mark Waugh scored 119(175) on a challenging surface. Matthew Hayden, Adam Gilchrist, and Lee gave valuable contributions from the other end.

While Hayden scored 69(120), Gilchrist scored 50(77), and Lee scored an unbeaten 41*(58). For the West Indies, the likes of Merwyn Dillon, Courtney Walsh, Nixon McLean, and Marlon Black claimed 2 wickets each. West Indies had to chase a mammoth first-innings deficit of 200 runs. They had to do it against one of the best bowling attacks of the time despite the absence of Shane Warne.

West Indies never looked to be in the game. It was a bit too much of a challenge for them. The Australian bowlers bowled well yet again and reduced WI to 173 runs in the second innings. Only Wavell Hinds and Andre Adams scored 41 and 40. Others managed to score 20 runs or less. For Australia, Lee was the pick of the bowlers, who claimed 5/61 in his 15 overs.
