It was on this day, October 4 in 1979, when Adam Voges was born. He is one of the oldest Australians to make their Test debuts and the oldest to score a century on his Test debut.
Voges was born in Subiaco, Western Australia, on October 4, 1979, and began his U19 cricketing career with Western Australia and even captained the side. His claim to fame came when he hit the fastest one-day century in the history of Australian cricket in the ING Cup. He needed only 62 deliveries to get 100. He became recognised for this accomplishment.
Voges was having a dream run in Australian domestic cricket in 2006-07 and was primed to make his Test debut when Damien Martyn announced his sudden retirement. However, the Australian selectors chose to bring back the experienced Andre Symonds into the Test format over Voges.
He did make appearances in Australian ODI and T20I sides in 2007 but never managed to cement his place in the stacked team.
His time to shine came when, at the age of 35, he was called up for his maiden Test series against the West Indies. He hammered 130* in his first outing in Tests at Windsor Park, Roseau, Dominica, which kicked off a golden run for the Australian batter in Tests.
Voges was even named Steven Smith’s vice-captain for the Test tour of Bangladesh, which was postponed due to security concerns, following the retirements of Brad Haddin, Shane Watson, Chris Rogers, and Michael Clarke during the Ashes.
During the 2015–16 season, Voges made up for the lost time by scoring 269*, 106*, and 239 in three innings against New Zealand and the West Indies. On Valentine’s Day 2017, he announced his retirement from international cricket. Among those who had played 20 matches, his average of 61.87 was the second-highest, behind Donald Bradman.
Overall, Voges scored 1485 runs at an average of 61.87 in 20 Tests, including five centuries and four fifties, with the highest score of 269*. He also made 870 runs at an average of 45.78 in 31 ODIs, including one century and four fifties, with the best score of 112*. Voges made 139 runs at a strike rate of 121.92 in seven T20Is for Australia, including one fifty and the best score of 51.
